I've finally decided that I want to go back to school to be a social worker. My local university doesn't offer social work as a program although I can (and probably will) get my prereqs out of the way.

At some point, I will have to relocate to a place that has a good social work program, and the University of Arizona in Tempe does.

It seems easy enough, take my core classes here and save money to move, and then look for a job in Phoenix and pick up and go, right?

Wrong.

I'm married (although my marriage is on the rocks and we may be getting a divorce) and I don't know anyone in Phoenix and it's scary to think of moving to a new place all by myself (depending on who gets custody of the kitties) where I don't know anyone.

The closest university with a social work program to where I currently live is in a city that doesn't have a lot of job opportunities, and if I went back to my hometown the only college there that has social work is in an area that I don't really want to live in.

So a "third party" city is really my only option. I've been checking http://cswe.org for accredited programs and there are several all over the country, but Tempe seems like a nice place to live with a lot of jobs and the kind of progressive community I like.

Bah, thoughts?

The University of Arizona is not in Tempe - that is Arizona State University. The UofA is right here, in Tucson.

Phoenix is fine, if you want to live in a huge metro area, with many miles of freeway and horrendous commutes. You may want to research your choices.

Tucson isn't perfect but, we have an excellent university, job opportunities and affordable housing.

I've heard Tuscan is pretty nice.

From a person that is in a state with one of the lowest unemployment record of the 50 states, I highly recommend taking the opportunity as they come to you.

If you and your husband do indeed get a divorce, I personally think moving would be something I would do. It is scary, but you would have a totally fresh start on your life.
I'm also the type of person that encourages people to take opportunities when they can. So if this is something you can do, I highly recommend doing it.

Tucson's unemployment rate is well below the national average and rents have actually gone DOWN in the past year. I pay $575 for a 2-bedroom triplex, with a fenced yard, in a decent neighborhood.

House prices HAVE gone up but, the market has flattened out, in recent weeks.

Being a Canadian, I can't help with this except to say good luck. Personally Arizona is my favourite US State I have visited. I saw Phoenix, Tucson, The Grand Canyon and mostly stayed in a small place called Wickenburg.

You need to follow your bliss!
