My downstairs neighbor has become involved in a program that offers volunteer opportunities to female college students on summer break. She's decided to host a student for 10 days some time this summer and wants to know if I'd be willing to do the same. The students are carefully screened, so I'm not worried about that. My concern, of course, is the cats. Obviously, if I agree to this, the person will need to know about them in advance and not be allergic. I have spare bedroom, so she would have some privacy and be able to keep the cats out. I've had overnight guests before, but haven't had anyone stay longer than that since I've had all four cats. With the exception of Gracie, they're all so shy around people they don't know. It could be pretty traumatic for them to have a stranger on in the house. On the other hand, if it turns out to be someone who like cats and is willing to be patient with them, it could also draw them out.

What do you all think? Should I agree to this?

I think if you're comfortable with having someone in the house then go for it. I would make it a point though to tell your neighbor to ask the students about the cats.

What type of volunteer program is this, out of curiosity?

Sounds interesting to me, but I would ask a few questions 1st before agreeing.

1) Do you need any special kind of insurance?
2) Does the programme provide you with funds for things like food?
3) Outside of the room, what would your expections be as host, eg, feeding, entertaining, etc?
4) If, God forbid, even with screening there is a problem, what type of compensation if any would you get for things like damages?
5) What kind of screening do you have to go through to be approved as host?

I know right now your priority is your cats, but you also have to make sure that you are protected!

I know, I am a cynical person, but you have to watch out for yourself!

I'm not completely comfortable with it - I like my privacy!

But, am willing for a good cause. It's operated by the Ursuline Sisters and is geared toward giving the students community service opportunities working with the poor.
