I am currently living in an apartment complex that has become a dumping ground for unwanted cats. I have 3 cats of my own, and I am fostering a fourth, and her 6 kittens. Needless to say, its a full house right now. On to my dilemma...one of the maintenance guys found 5 abandoned kittens today outside, covered in fleas. They look to be about a week old. I have called all the local shelters, but no one can take them. Does anyone know of anyone in the Tampa Bay, FL area that can care for these kittens? I can't take them in myself, but I don't want to leave them outside to starve or be killed, and to take them to the local animal shelter is certain death. Any help would be appreciated, I am just sick over this. Thanks, Jennifer.

Here are some shelters/rescues in your area:

I'm glad these kittens are no longer outside in the elements, but with them being soo young, they are very fragile. The flea infestation does not help at all. hopefully someone will have a good flea treatment idea for you. I know you cannot use the normal stuff on little kittens. You will also need to make sure they are warm, and are fed frequently.

It's nice to know people care
thank you for stepping in. I wish you the best. Good luck

Actually, they are outside. I can't take them in as I already have 4 adult cats and 6 kittens. I haven't even seen them yet, but the maintenance guy showed them to my boyfriend and he called me at work. So these little guys are in a dangerous situation right now. I have called most of the local shelters on this list, but I'll keep trying! Thanks for the info.

If they don't get a meal very soon, they might well perish
they are just so delicate at this age. I'm sorry you have this burden placed upon your shoulders, thank you for trying to help the little babes. You say the shelter(s) will be certain death, but it might be their only option
they will certainly not survive outside and without care. I really hope you find someone or someplace willing to take them in. Their story has saddened me, but you caring about them gives hope....

What about contacting vet offices. Due to how critical the situation is...I would scoop them up and take them to a vet office and see if anyone there would be willing to foster these kittens.

Well by the time I got home from work lat night, the kittens were gone. I could hear them crying in someone's apartment, so I knocked on their door. She only had one of the kittens and told me that people just came and took them. I'm sure they don't know how to care for these kittens properly, and they will most likely starve do death. I informed this woman that she needed to get to a pet store pronto and purchase kitten formula and a bottle. She looked at the clock and told me it was getting late, and that she would probably just go tomorrow. I think I was a little bit mean, but I told her (in front of her 3 young boys) that tomorrow would be too late for the kitten. So she did end up going last night, I hope at least that kitten will survive. I'm going to stop and check up on her tonight. Unfortunatley I have no idea who took the other 4 kittens, but I hope that they had the sense to call a vet, or at least go talk to someone at a pet supply store to get care information. Thanks again to everyone who responded to this thread.

Oh My what a situation. Thank you for caring so for these cast offs kitties.
At a week old, i could hope that their Feline mother may have come back to get them. Ferals and strays are good mothers, but they have to eat too. But it does not sound as if this is the case.

If you were unintentionally rude to this person due to your concern, maybe as an act of kindness or revisit this lady and offer a bottle and some KMR. If KMR isnt in your budget Goats milk diluted with pedialyte will defintely be better than nothing for these little ones.

Regardless, if that 1 kitten doesnt get proper hydration from food and warmth soon. It will not last more than a couple of days. At 1 week they are so helpless.

Good luck and keep us informed.
ANd most of all....thank you for the 10 cats you are already taking care of!!!

I'm glad someone else wanted them, but as you said, unfortunatly they probably don't know how to care for such tiny babies. Thank you for caring about them. I wish you and all the babies the best. Give all your kitties hugs from me and mine

I'm sending lots of prayers to these little ones.
Hopefully they will look to the computer to find some advice and find this site.
I raised one of my cats (Baby) from a few days old and it was tough.

Keep us posted on these little ones...

I was once in a similar situation and had the same fears about a kitten that was taken at a week old. To my surprise the woman who took her asked my advice on how to make formula -- by chance I found a recipe in a library book I had. Today that kitten is a beautiful, spoiled cat who still loves her baba now and then. She named her kitten Precious and she never quits talking about her.

People -- and cats -- can surprise you.

What about posting a note in the mail area? Presumably, the kittens were taken by other peoplein your building. Just maybe list some basic care, and tell people that you are also a foster and to call you if they need any advice.
