My cat Bailey is pregnant and I was looking at her nipples last night and they seem very dry and almost scabby. Is this normal or should they be soft and supple? Do I need to put something on them???

I'm sorry, I don't know for sure what to advise.

I guess if they are just a little dry, I wouldn't worry too much. But if they are at all scabbed, I would definitely call the vet. After all, once the babies are born and start nursing, that could be painful!

We use bag balm for this type of thing. Wait until someone else comments on this. It is basically vaseline, which I suppose would work just the same. It just moisturizes dry skin without any medication or scent or flavours or anything. I wouldn't do it once the kittens are born but until then it is probably ok. Ring the vet to ask for sure. I am not a vet or anyone authorized to give advice, but that is what we used on the cats at the shelter I worked at.

When my girls are pregnant, they get a waxy flakey covering to their nipples. I thought it was because it made the nipples stand out more so the babies could find them.

It doesn't seem to bother the mother or kittens. I do try to remove some of it if it looks dirty.

My cat had dry nipples too. when she had her litter in the middle of the night and the nipples were still dry, I drove to the vet hospital at 4:00 am to get a bottle/milk replacement kit. I finally dozed off and around 8:30 that morning all the kittens were nursing. Once the kittens start suckling on a dry nipple, that action will eventually bring them into production from our experience. I'm pretty sure they'll be allright.
