What would you do?

If a member of your family was harrassing you? Via internet, and well just now at 15 til midnight two hang up phone calls. I have caller id. so I know whom it was. I am really at my wits end with this, and am not sure what to do. I dont know if the phone calls, and Internet slander warrant a call to the police, RE harrassment or not.

So what would you do?

I would call the police non emergency number.
They are usually always willing to offer suggestions on what you should do.

A family member? Block his names on the net and block his number on the phone.

I was in a similar situation a couple of nights ago.

are they calling on a land line or a cell phone?

She, and shes only a member of the family by marriage. and unfortunely i dont yet want to block the number..as its my fathers

If this person hasn't threatened you or shown up at your door, I would wait it out and see if it stops.

The police told me to change my phone number, which I did. However, I had received 23 calls over a period of 12 hours, and it was a cell phone.

I don't know what they're saying to you on the internet, but I'm sure you can block them. If they keep coming at you via IM from other screen names there are ways to block people who are not on your buddy list from contacting you.

its not only that but she has been spreading lies against my business on forms as well. as of this morning most of those posts have been removed from where she placed them via a TOS. I unplugged my phone because i did keep getting calls. And this morning i contacted my non Er number. They suggested a Harrassment restraining order. and make sure to note the internet problems as well. as apparemtly some new federal law in place. So we shall see..

I was going to say, by all means ask the police for advice but as for anything else it will be very difficult if it's just phonecalls and e-mails. I have been in the situation and it tooks months to get anything from the phone company to say it was this person calling me. If they say it wasn't them its so hard to prove anything and for you it's like banging your head off a brick wall.
However if someone is lying about your business it is more serious, whats the word for it? is it slander? something like that and I think the police can do something about this.
Why don't you make an appointment at the station and go in with any evidence/print outs from the internet - just so you can discuss it face to face.

I'm glad you contacted the cops. Maybe the restraining order will do the trick. Other than that, she is not only harrasing you, she is slandering you if she is spreading lies. If she continues, SAVE everything she writes. When your phone is plugged back in, let the answering machine pick up in case she leaves a message. That way you will have a legal recording, since she knew she was being recorded. You may never choose to take her to court, but be sure to collect all the evidence you can, just in case.

I would confront them. Pick up the phone and tell them to call you at a better hour...such as 2 pm on a Satuday.
IMO its easier to talk real with family members then with non.

Or you could just threaten to tell their mom

Yikes! OK, I take back my last post. I admit I didn't read the whole thread.

Anyhoo, yes, people by marriage totally get the police involved...or talk with her husband, your blood family member. Unless of course he's on her side.

thanks. Yes. My father sides with her of course. as he always does. I have the legal wheels moving on it now. Its annoying. overly, this is not the first time she has started something. but it will be the last
