Hi everyone, I am new to the kitty world. I just adopted a 2 year old neutered male from my local shelter and he is a lovely boy but is almost as big as a dog. I was told that he was picked up as a stray and brought to the shelter there after. Im taking him to the vet in a few days for a full health checkup. My question is: Im not sure if I should be putting him on a weight control formula until I see my vet?

I'm not an expert, but I would keep him on what he was eating at the shelter since you will be seeing the vet in just a few days. If you changed his diet now, it's very possible the vet may change it again, and you wouldn't want to upset his system twice.

I agree... just wait until you see the vet... switching foods should be done gradually anyhow, so you'd be in the middle of the process once he gets into the vet... he may just be a bigger kitty to!! Oliver is 4 now and a healthy 15 pounds! The vet is not concerned about his weight at all (doesnt think he should gain much more, but is happy with his weight compared to his bone structure)... and when he gets his monthly baths, he looks like a little wet rat in my tub! He's mostly hair!

Congrats on your new fur baby and thanks so much for choosing a pound kitty that was saved from a street life! Welcome to the boards... there are so many informed ppl here and I'm sure you'll be back!
