Okay, so I am fostering a pregnant mum for now.. and I ahve been looking everywhere for signs that labour is near.. but I must be looking in all the wrong spots. I even went to the library, but couldn't find anything really.. found a decent book for help during labour if one gets breeches or whatever..

Anyhow

She won't leave me alone.. I have her in my sisters bedroom, and I am staying in there while she and the kittens are in there.. but when I am in there, she won't let me out of sight.. if I get up to grab something she jumps down and starts meowing at me nonstop and weaves in between my legs. She wants constant attention. I have a box set up with newspaper and a blanket, a basket with a towel, and a large cat kennel with nothing in it yet, I have to put something in it, I wanted to give ehr a choice of where she wanted. Anyhow, she's still eating alot, and drinking alot alot.. I haven't found any fluid or anything anywhere, but she is lactating, last time I checked.

How old is she? If she is a youngster and this is her first litter, a bit of clinginess is normal. She will probably appreciate belly rubs, and you'll have fun feeling the kittens squirming around.

I've found that their appetites don't necessarily drop off all that much right before they give birth. The biggest tell-tale sign is a discharge from the vulva, which will be fluid mixed with a bit of blood. This usually means she will deliver in the next 72 hours.

In general, as long as she seems fine (which sounds like the case here), there's no need to worry. She'll have them when she is good and ready, probably in less than a week. Have fun!

I think she will do just fine, if she is on her third litter this year! My foster Sugartoes had 3 litters in 6 months! Bad news for the kitten population, but at least they know what they are doing! LOL!

Sounds like she is a real lovebug, too! I'm sure you will have a friendly litter very soon. You said you had a towel in one basket. I used towels, too, until I read at TCS that the kittens can catch their claws in the towel, so an old sheet or blanket is better. Remember the blanket or surface where she gives birth will be a bit of a mess, so you want to be able to dispose of it, or at least wash it easily.

Be sure to post pics when the happy day comes. (Once you can use a camera and flash and not disturb the little ones.) Bless you for fostering...it is a real joyful job, isn't it?!?!

Still no babies. I wonder if she delayed labour. I read somewhere that they can do that. Anyway, I've been recording her temp for the past two days, and it hasn't dropped yet, so at least I will know when labour is near.

I am only using the towels for delivery. Then I have some blankets after all the babies are born.

Okay... so last night I took her temp and it dropped to 36.5. The day before when I checked it, it was 38 something. Anyhow. Her nipples feel different, but she wouldn't let me check if she was lactating or not. But she seems to be laying down alot.. she used to follow me all over the room, but now she mainly lays under the bed on the blanket, or on my bed.. she'll cry tome till I go over and pet her. So I think it should be within the next few days. But she has tricked me before.

It's just awful waiting, isn't it? My cat never showed any signs of anything, except for the very last night, she was so huge, she couldn't lie on her side, she had to lie on her back! Can't wait to hear the good news!

I love watching and feeling the babies move ... it is one of my favorite times with Lexus, as she is quite affectionate at that stage in her pregnancy.

The rest of the time, she is just smelly rotten! *smile*

Looking forward to your big day!

So Gaye, I've only done it once - when do they first start to move? A couple weeks before delivery? I remember that they got extremely active the last week?

It varies, but about ten days to two weeks would be a safe answer. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later though - these cats we love so much are quite individual little things and don't like to adhere to any set structure. *wink*

The last days before delivery are IMO the most active for the kittens. Poor Lexus actually turns around and growls at them when they all get to moving around madly at once. I have never been able to tell if they actually complied with her stern admonishments while still in utero, but if the very professional, almost business-like way she approaches raising her litters after delivery is any indication at all, I would suspect they knew from well before birth that when Momma ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy. *LOL*

LOL! Well...they say human babies recognize their mothers' voices. Why not kittens?

For the original poster - for kitties the due date is a "guideline"! Ooh - exciting! Do you know the color of the father? Oh, the possibilities...

Nope! No idea.. I'm not even sure where she came from. I just got a call one day, three weeks ago now
, asking me if I could take a pregnant momma until the kittens were 8-12 weeks old and are able to go back to the rescue center and be adopted.
