We take our clam chowder very seriously here in New England. Red, Manhattan style chowder is considered a sacrilege.
I prefer the white, creamy chowder myself.

I was curious if there were any regional preferences where you live, and what your own personal preference is.

Even in California it's got to be white and creamy with lots of clams and a crusty French bread.

I voted for white creamy chowder...but honestly that is the only kind I've ever tried!

I used to never like the NE and used to eat Campbell's Manhattan all the time, but now I like both!

must be real NE clam chowder, with lots of soft potato and chewy clammy bits. But it also has to be fresh, made from real cream, and horrible for you.

We were at a restaurant years ago, and dh said, "You have to taste this potato soup...its the best I've ever had!" I love good potato soup, so I tried a bite, and it tasty "fishy" to me. I said, "Thats not potato soup, thats clam chowder!" (I don't like seafood unless it is deep fried and you can't taste the sea in the food!)

His response? "Its not very good clam chowder, but its the best potato soup I ever had!" LOL!

I clicked YUCK! I don't like clam chowder! But dh does, and I only see him eat the white stuff. He was born in NY state, but grew up in Indiana.

I usually only have clam chowder once/year. Its at Appleton, WI's annual Okterfest celebration. The local scuba club makes it as thier fundraiser.
I buy a couple of quarts to take home. The chowder's creator keeps the recipe a top secret. He was approached by Campbells soup company for the recipe to a tune of $15,000. (this is what a member told me) He of course turned it down. The members who help make it do not even know all the ingredients!!
Its awsome.............

White and creamy, thanks! Which reminds me it's past time to make some!

I like the white and creamy chowder only. Of course honestly I've never tried the other one but I really like the white one so it'd be hard for me to go with another one very easily.

White and Creamy - but it must have lots of clams - not just one little clam running through the broth in rubber boots.

I don't eat shellfish, but when I did it was NE. I do make & eat cod chowder though and I like that both ways.

Give me the creamy chower with more clams than potatos. I dont care if its not cost-wise, add the extra clams.

I love seafood, that of lobster, clams, scallops, shrimp and I'll take all the seafood I can get.
