I have to go to the doctor today. Just regular girl appointment, but I hate gong and get so nervous. They are also going to draw some blood to test my hemoglobins (my mom has had a blood clot that was life threatening so I am a high risk clot girl) and cholesterol and all that junk. I hate getting blood drawn because they have such a hard time finding the veins in my arms I guess they are really small, so they dig around till they find one.
Ouchie!! So please wish me luck!!

Movin' on up!
If your veins are that small and hard to hit, a GOOD phlebotomist would use a butterfly needle and a syringe.

I have only had it drawn twice. Every time these schedule me for blood work I don't go. But if my new doctor decides to do it today then I am going to go through with it.

You have only had blood drawn twice?? It's possible you just had a bad phlebotomist. Good Luck!

I'm a nurse, and used to be great at drawing blood on EVERYONE! I haven't drawn blood for over 8 years in my current job, but remember the tricks.

First, if you are cold, your blood vessels get smaller. Second, if you are nervous, your blood vessels get smaller. The nurse or phlebotomist who knows their stuff will put a warm washcloth on your arm or hand. S/he will also help reassure you.

Let the person at the desk know you have small veins, and are nervous. Hopefully they have one person who is great at this, and they will surprise you at how easy it can be. Very little pain, little or no digging...a good person will just slip it in. You can even bring a little fuzzy toy to keep in your other hand, and just pet it and think calming thoughts of your kitty.

I'm going for my female check monday afternoon. I hate it too.

I have never had anyone been able to pull blood from my arm, they always have to use a butterfly in my hand. I didn't know that if you are nervous it makes your blood vessels smaller. I am TERRIFIED of needles. I tried to tell the woman that was drawing my blood once that i needed to lay down, cause i was feeling lightheaded, and she told me "Oh you're fine" and shrugged me off. 30 seconds later I was on the floor passed out. My husband was FURIOUS, because i was about 15 weeks pregnant. Anyway, thanks for the tip, i'll try to relax, and maybe that will help.

And good luck on your woman visit. I hate them. With a passion. Just remember that it's good for the long run.

Ashley, hope your appt went well today. I was just in the hospital and they have the same trouble getting blood from my arm as well. They can't find the veins.........
I've had some nurses that can get it and others just poke around. I get mad and ask them to try and find someone who can do it. Not really mad at them, just the situation.

Oh yucky! I feel your pain...I've had blood taken 3 times in the past few weeks. Fortunately a good outcome. Try to find a spot on the wall in the other direction to focus on and concentrate on breathing. That seems to help me. I have small veins too. The past few times I havn't even bruised.

Well they didn't do ANYTHIGN yesterday! I mean I talked to the doctor and got my BC prescrition but he didn't do ANYTHING I was scheduled for and I have to go back to get all the work done at 3 on the 22nd. So I wasted my money, my gas, my time. UGh!! that makes me mad!
Now I have to wait again for him to make me miserable for a little while and go home feeling gross!

That's very annoying. At least you could have got it all over with for another year instead of waiting!

He only likes to do them mid cycle. He did look at a funny mole I had which took all of 30 seconds. But that is not what I went to see him for. I am going to go back for that paps but I don't know if I will go back to him after that. It will all depend on how he does. I mean the receptionist should have told me his prefrences when I made the appointment.
