The neighbours who live two houses away from us have 2 cats - both pretty tortoiseshells. They are big cats who spend most of their time sitting on their garden shed, which gives them a vantage point over a few gardens and the school field behind our house. They are obviously siblings as I've seen them grooming each other and lying almost one on top of the other.

Merlin, our neutered 10 month old tabby has suddenly taken a dislike to these 2 cats (who are obviously older and TWICE his size). Whilst I realise he is asserting himself and carving out some territory for him and his sister, things are getting a little scary.

Two nights ago, we let him out into the back garden, whereupon he purposefully jumped up onto the fence, looking out towards the neighbours shed - whereupon one of these tortoiseshells were sleeping. Without any messing about, he crossed two gardens, crossed the lawn and jumped up onto this shed before proceeding to beat the living daylights out of this cat, who rapidly shot over the fence into the field. I had never seen anything like it..... I thought cats went through the whole staring / growling / fuzzy fur thing. There was nothing either my wife or I could do except watch from the window, as there were 2 fences and gardens between us and the incident.

Anyway - after his unprovoked attack, he came back in all pleased with himself and went back outside, whereupon he did EXACTLY the same thing with the other cat that was there on the shed.

The problem is that these 2 cats live there. It's their house, their garden and their shed. If Merlin is going to do this, they are going to have nowhere to "hang out". The amazing thing is that he is HALF these cats size and has a very thin and sleek build - opposed to their fat stocky fluffiness.

Does anyone have any idea about WHY he is doing this, and if there is any way we can stop him?
Im more worried he is going to get hurt !!

On another note, there is a black and white cat a few houses down that he torments. His trick is to taunt it, have it chase him and bring it back into the garden where his sister is. This poor black and white cat sees 2 enemies and turns tail as fast as it can.

The fuzzy little purrbox who loves his tummy rubbed and never scratches or bites either my wife and I is a complete psychopath when he goes out !!

it sounds like he is extremely territorial, and feels the other cats are encroaching on his terrirtory even though they are quite far away. This is tough because Im sure your cat owning neighbors are extremely unhappy about this. Eventually your cat will either tire of beating on the other cats, or will just except a little more, their being on his "land". But the question is whether your neighbors will have the patience to wait until that happens. A backyard fence is a possibility as I have. My cat cannot get outside of it, as it is 6 foot high, wood. Good luck with this

Our fence is 6ft high and wood too. The problem is that Merlin scales it like he is Spiderman.

goodness!!!
He is a determined little bugger. I guess if it were me and my neighbors complained about it, I would perhaps harnass Merlin in the back yard, giving him plenty of room to roam, but not to get out. Sorry I cant come up with anything better

Has he been neutered yet? if not that might help his aggresive behavior.

Does he come when you call him? Maybe you can go outside with him, and if he acts aggressive you can call and shake a treat bottle. Hopefully he will come home, and you can give him treats and bring him inside.

You are right to be concerned about him, if he is so aggressive with the calm females, he may go pick a fight with a big tomcat and get injured. Or if the other cat has a disease, he could catch it from a bite wound.

Maybe you can add a flimsy chicken wire top to your fence, so if he climbs it, it wobbles, and he will stay in your yard where he is safe.

Yes he was neutered at 6 months old.

He's already sent the big ginger tom from across the street packing. "Jaffa" hasn't been seen ANYWHERE near our house for weeks. (Jaffa was un-neutered and sprayed near our front door)
We think the black and white cat he keeps taunting is the other tom that lives a few houses down. The problem is it's gargantuan - like a small dog. As I said before, this is the cat he keeps bring INTO our garden with his sister there - almost as if he's saying "come on - now try it... there's 2 of us now".

He does come when he's called (but only really when it's time to come in at night). If he is out "bothering" the neighbourhood then it's pretty much 50/50.

The sad thing is that he is SO loving when he's inside the house. He is so stupid and soft it's ridiculous. He's NEVER scratched or bitten myself or my wife, even in excited play. He just loves attention and being stroked, picked up, cuddled etc etc - and purrs so hard it sounds like he's about to explode. He's great with small children too (i.e. my 7 yr old nephew and 8 yr old daughter of my wife's friend)........but when he goes outside it's a completely different matter

Have you thought about cat-proof fencing. It keeps your cat inside the yard and keeps the others from getting in. Since you already have a 6' fence, it would be easy to install.
