Whenever I start talking on the phone, Sylvestra always comes running and pipes up at the top of her lungs.

She gets so loud that it often interferes with our conversation and I have to go and put her up in another room just to talk.

I think she thinks because there's no one else in the room that I must be talking to her, so her natural response is to talk back.

Any ideas for humane ways to get her to stop doing this?

Thanks

Sylvestra is a cute one!
If it's her habit to "talk" to you there's not much you can do. You'll just have to make sure she's in another room when you're on the phone, or get a cordless and hide away in the closet.

Yup. I agree with that. At least she's not trying to chew on the phone cord while I'm talking, like Mellie does. (and that's the only time she does that.)

Guess that's the only option. Sometimes I honestly think she's a Siamese cat in a tuxedo.

It must be a "tuxedo" trait! Whenever we're on the phone, Jamie starts the meowing. I really don't believe he thinks we're talking to him, since he phones himself - it's just a fun game to him, or jealousy (Hey, you should be paying attention to ME!). I guess it's comparable to trying to read a newspaper with a kitty lying on top of it.

My Basil used to do that. I agree that a lot of cats seem to think that you are talking to them when you are on the phone. To them itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s logical I suppose, after all often there are no other humans present, so you must be talking to them.

For a long time I kept the old bell ring phone, Basil often made it to the phone, when it rang, before I did. He wasnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t quite so interested when I finally changed to a phone when an electronic ring.

Larry.

My kitten only does that when she knows the person on the other end. And then she tries to smell them through the phone!!

One time, she actually talked to another cat on the phone. She meowed and sniffed this end, and he meowed and pawed the phone on the other (the two cats know each other, although I find it hard to believe just by voice).

I don't know how you'd stop it either?

I also think it is because your cat thinks he is being spoken to.
A friend said that her dog barks while she is on the phone.

Magnum does that while Scully 'talks' to people on the phone (oh and Boomer has been known to make some long distance calls)

I have given up, people just expect it now when they call me

Mia insist on speaking to my mom, i told mom we gave Mia up because we aren't suppose to have a cat where we stay. I think my mom knows she's still here but she never says anything. I have to put her in the bathroomwhen I call mom. Then Mia knocks on the door and meows so helplessly.
