I don't know alot about this.

But it's something i'd like to have done as well as collars. Only Ollie has a collar at the moment Missy lost hers, in the house and I haven't found it! and Simba and Star are only just big enough really.

there all going to be indoor only.

but it's something I feel, if it's safe, and it means That if my kittys collar slpped off, there is a permant fixture to bring them back home, it sounds good to me!

I live in the UK, what types of chips are there? or are they all the same....

I'm really knew to this, never had a cat mircchipped ever!

There are two makers - that I know of - one is PetLog and the I can't remember the name of the other off hand!
(I will come back when I've had a look at Willow's file!
)

I do think it's a good idea to have your kitties chipped too! The first thing I did when Willow arrived was to take him to the vet to see if he was chipped!

Often, too, vets will hold a special event and you can get microchipping done for a reduced price!

I had Jake and Izzy chipped over Christmas.

The vet has a special offer on and it only cost me £20 for each with Petlog, and they dont (Petlog) charge for any updates should you move house.

My vet is very keen on the idea of chipping, if it gives you and your cat a better chance to be re-united should the unthinkable happen then it has to be worth it.

I left it late my cats being 11 and 12 but i am glad i did.

Both Jake and Izzy wear ordinary collars on which they have my telephone number on a disc and the tag which says that they are chipped. But at least if they lose these i can have relative peace of mind knowing that they may still find their way back to us.

I'll be getting Oliver chipped sometime next week (I started a thread about this a few days ago... check a little further down)... he's indoor only too, but sometimes goes to the kitty sitter's and home to my parents' with me.... it's injected into the scruff area on the cat's neck with what looks like a pretty large needle, but it doesnt hurt anymore than taking blood and the chip is about the size of a grain of rice... your kitty may be peeved for a few minutes, but he'll get over it and you'll sleep better at night not worrying so much....

I don't think so - but I could be wrong!

Claire, the other 'chip is by Identichip Locate.

Both are recognised by the same scanner!

All the chips used in the EU meet ISO standards, so they can be scanned everywhere in Europe, at the very least.
The U.S. is one of the few countries not using that standard, but Congress just passed an Agriculture Appropriations Bill that should change that.

My vets (and apparently they aren't the only ones in the country doing it, according to the vet nurse) have been running an offer since last summer where if you buy 2 bags of Royal Canin food (min £19) you get your microchipping for free - sadly I got Pebbles done before that, and I keep debating with Ginger - he is 14 now, and rarely goes far, plus is fairly well known. I had made up my mind to have him done last month, but then had to spend nearly £100 on Pebbles. His next weigh in is on the 16th, so have until then to decide.
