I used to get several migraines a year. Now I haven't had one for over 5 years. I still get bad headaches quite often, but thank God, not a full-blown migraine.
Mine were related to emotional stress + physical strain on my neck. Now I'm much better at handling stress, and I'm careful about posture and sleeping positions etc in order not to put a strain on my neck.
I never had a medication that dealt with a migraine. I usually threw up everything, including water, so I couldn't take anything anyway. I just suffered through and wondered how on earth it would be possible to ever feel better again.
