Hi everybody. My name is Marc, from Portland Oregon. I chose the name “Opposable Thumb†because it is the only advantage I have over my cats. They are all smarter than me…

I find you in a time of tragedy. My youngest kitty (Linus) came up missing this week and I fear he was the victim of a coyote. This has happened before and I have absolutely had it. I will no longer continue to raise my cats as snack fodder for these awful beasts and suffer the unbelievable heartache and guilt that follows. Thereâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s nothing more pathetic than seeing a grown man cry.

My wife and I are going to try and erect outdoor security enclosures. I wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t elaborate (here) at this time, but I could use your help. I am pretty familiar with vBulletinâ„¢ forums, so I should be able to find my way around here; post photo etc. Perhaps there has been a previous thread about these enclosures before and my preliminary searches have simply been formulated poorly. If someone could post a link to a previous discussion on this topic I would be grateful. If not, than I will probably begin a new thread in a few days. I have seen many examples by googling “Cat fencesâ€, but perhaps the best suggestion has eluded me.

Thanks in advance. I will try and post some photos of Panda and Gibson soon (and perhaps Linus too, but that will bring back the heartache).

OT

I'm so sorry to hear about Linus. Hissy and her husband posted a thread with photos about the building of their kitty enclosure, I'll see if I can find the link for you.

Wow, thanks for the big welcome! I like that big enclosure (from the link). It seems like a lot of work but very rewarding. I sure would like them to be able to spend a lot of time outside without all the anxiety (for me…)
. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve started to go out there with big Gibson and walk with him a little, but he wants to run like a horse and I canâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t keep up, and I canâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t keep him from crossing the street towards the woods. Plus itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s still really cold. I usually just make sure the coast is clear and head back inside…to worry.

Perhaps Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ll jump-start that thread and see what a few of you think about the different approaches available.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the welcomes! Its been 11 days now and I don't think I'll see my little friend again
....but good news!

We just picked up a new kitty today from a foster home! She's a one and a half year old tuxedo. Really sweet. She paces a bit, but if you get down on the rug, she'll rub and rub. She's really playful, so I hope her and Gibson will get along. He hissed at first, so we'll see.

Wish us luck. We're watching the Oscars so maybe we'll name her after a big movie star. Keira, Reese, or Charlize? The nice foster home lady just called her Precious, but she didn't know her name so I thought we could rename her.

Needless to say....she'll be an indoor kitty.

Thanks again you guys.

Hello Marc, welcome to the site. Building an enclosure isn't really that hard, just takes some time. I built one for our BIG kitties. I would say the most difficult part would be a covered roof, if you are going to put one on. If you get a lot of snow, like I do here, you need to make sure the roof is strong enough to hold the weight of the snow. My enclosure is covered, but has no roof. I have covered areas inside the enclosure for our cats to go into during bad weather.
