The stray cat that we have been feeding (we moved in to a new house and she just showed up one day--we think she was already pregnant) gave birth to six kittens on our back porch last night. One of them was stillborn, but the other five look healthy.

Right now they are in a dog carrier (with an open door) lined with blankets. nit I am concerned about them being outside because it can get pretty cold at night, and it is supposed to rain this week. They did fine last night but this morning the mother tried to move one kitten, realized she had no where to go, and then brought it back to the nest.

My concern is that she'll try to move them over the fence (since she used to hang out in our neighbor's yard before we moved in). Would she/can she do that?

We are considering trying to move them into the garage. The problem with that is the mother freaks out if we try to open the garage door, and she's never even been in the garage.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Personally I'd lock mom and kits in the cage while she is nursing and put the cage in the garage. Put it as far from the door and kinda make it secluded (put a blanket over the cage). And keep them all there for a few weeks.

Welcome to TCS....I would definately keep her and the kittens in a secure cage (oftentimes a collapsable dog crate is big enough for mom and kittens). The problem with allowing her to get out of the cage is that she can become pregnant again 1 week after giving birth. If she is friendly enough....I would try to contact some local rescue groups to see if they would be able to assist you getting the kittens placed as well as mom. Here is one lady I know who works with orphaned kittens and may be able to direct you to a rescue group you can work with:

Send Jeri an email and I'm sure she will get back to you.

Is she a friendly girl? Can you handle her easily? I would take her inside my house if she is spooky in the garage ... a spare bedroom, dimly lit and away from the regular traffic and noise patterns of your home would be perfect until you can get her in to see a vet to be spayed (which should happen when the kittens are about 6 to 8 weeks of age and completely weaned onto solid foods - they may still nurse, but as long as they are eating consistantly on their own, you can spay Momma). Play some soft music, keep the door closed and don't allow easily excited children in for a visit until Momma is more comfortable with her new surroundings inside.
