I have had Gizzy from 7weeks (now 9months) but I just wondered what age kittens can leave their mum?
I was a member of another cat forum and got told off for taking Gizzy at 7 weeks but it was either take him and know he was going to a good home or him going to someone else because wether I took him home with me or not he was still going to be taken home by someone and i already loved him soooooo much

Usually, with most breeders it's atleast 10-12 weeks. Some times longer depending on the individual kitten or if shipping may be involved or if they are watching to see if it is "breed or show" quality. So really 10-12 is best but they should not leave before 8 weeks, they usually due fine at the age. I have seen kittens due fine leaveing at 6 weeks, but if it could be helped (mom dies, can't produce milk, ect.)they should never be with out mom before 8 weeks. Some might even come and post 8 weeks is too early even. My kittens don't leave before 10-12 weeks.

Celestialrags is right - usually between 10 to 12 weeks depending on the individual kitten. I keep my kittens until they finish their kitten series vaccinations, usually around 12 weeks old. Some are a little older, some a little younger, depending on maturity level, weight, size, health factors, personality factors - it just depends on the individual for me.

Did I do right by taking Gizzy at 7weeks? He is fine and has no problems and settled in straight away. It was a collegue I got him from and she was going on holiday so wanted to make sure all the kittens went to their homes. Everyone wanted Giz as he was the only ginger kitty so he would have gone wether I had him or not. I know now for the future what age kittys should leave their mum. I think us having Sasha (our dog) proberly helped and I kept him with me all the time

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but not much you can do about it now.

You probbably shouldn't have taken Gizzy until about 10-12 weeks, but a lot of kittens in pet stores etc get taken from their mothers from about 6 weeks.

So as long as you give Gizzy all the love and care she needs, then it doesn't really matter.

But definately in future try to keep the kittens with Mum until about 12 weeks if possible.

I do not agree that they "get over it". You are fortunate....our rescue has seen cats that were taken too soon from their moms that developed a series of behavior issues (ie inappropriate suckling). It is also the law in my state that cats be placed when they reach 8 weeks of age.
