Except that rain is so necessary to the earth's well-being it's nice not to have to deal with it! But none of us have good coping skills. The people in L.A. tend to drive faster when it rains! Combined with all the slick gunk that comes up from the highways that is bad for accidents.

For the first time yesterday I got a really good look at little Alfie. (Well, actually, he's getting bigger. He's about half as big as Louie-Louie now.) I've been trying to figure out what color his coat is. Now I realize it's one of those beautiful changable colors. From some angles it is buff colored then when the angle changes it kind of shimmers and turns darker, more orange. There's a name for that kind of fur, but I don't remember it.

I've seen short-haired cats like that, but he is the first long-haired one I've seen. It's really pretty.

It's likely to rain again tonight. Surely my boys are learning?!

Roll Call: Alfie, Blackie, Dude, Henry, Josesito, Lady Day, Louie, Oscar, Sneakers 9 Total.

Well, it's not rainy looking and the weathercasters aren't predicting rain tonight, so I put the food down at the feeding bench.

As I stood talking to some friends, we watched the cats' interacting. Louie-Louie was harassing Red, but being wonderful to Alfie, Henry was hanging back, Josesito, Blackie and Lady Day seemed to be remembering the old days when they hung old together all the time, and Oscar was challenging Red's right to chomp away at a pile of kibble. Just normal cat stuff.

Roll Call: Alfie, Blackie, Dude, Henry, Josesito, Lady Day, Louie, Oscar, Red, Sneakers. 10 Total.

I haven' t even fed the cats yet but I have to record something that I saw today. When I got back from an errand, I saw little Blackie in the parking lot nosing around a car. I could see another cat under the car, but just barely. I walked over to check and there was Red. I rarely see him in the daytime. He's a handsome guy.

I said "HI, Red," in my very softest tone of voice. He looked at me like I was a demon from hell and ran INTO A STORM DRAIN! He rain right down into it! That must be where some of the cats hang out during the day. It gave me a feeling like the one you get when an elevator drops unexpectedly -- like a kick in the gut. I wish they had someplace safer to hang out. I wish they would go into their nice safe hidey boxes.

I always had a feeling that kitten Alfie must have followed an adult cat into the storm drain that he got lost in. There must be a system of them under the grounds here. I'm glad I helped Alfie get out, though, because it rained hard the next night.

I'll edit this with a roll call later.

Okay, I've fed my little sewer cats now.

Roll Call: Alfie, Blackie, Dude, Henry, Josesito, Lady Day, Louie, Oscar, Red, Sneakers 10 Total.

My little sweeties were waiting with noses pressed against the glass tonight when I went down. Even Red came halfway up the walkway.

I'm concerned about Mamie. She hasn't shown up in 9 days. Now that I know they hide out in the drain systems, I'm worried more than ever.

My daughter brought me home at about 7:30 tonight and my sweet cats were at the gate waiting when I got there. Did they hear me talking to her? Do they know the sound of her car?

Came upstairs and got their food. There they were noses pressed against the glass waiting for me.

Still no Mamie, though.

I'll bet they know the sound of her car. Elsa could definitely tell my car - she would show her face from under the trailer as soon as I got to work.

Ohh I hope Mamie comes back!! We had a stray that we use to feed that lived in the sewers! The darn thing didn't have a brain in his head apparently and would come out and sun himself on the road!! The story doesn't end well so Ill stop there!

Im wishing you the best of luck, and looking forward to reading this in the future!

I'm not too sure about the car. Tonight I got home about half an hour past our usual feeding time, and no one came to greet me. We were talking awhile, too! Maybe it's because most of them were waiting at the entry door to the building, which is fairly far from the gate. A few were waiting on the feeding bench, but were facing toward the building.

They were so focused on the front door, waiting for my appearance from there they missed me altogether. They weren't even aware that I was in the yard until I called to them!

Mamie still hasn't shown.

Tonight is not so good for me. I'm sick to my stomach. From the antiobiotics that I took for the ear infection. Sigh.

I went down to feed the munchkins, got to the mailbox, had to come back up to the bathroom, then lay down for awhile.

On the second trip, there they were at the door waiting for me. I wasn't so full of vitality, but they were. Happily high-stepping to the feeding bench with their tails up like flags held high. They are so lovable! They can always make me smile, even when I'm determined to feel sorry for myself..

Hi Kluchetta -- I keep thinking of Elsie coming to greet you when you drove up. That is such a nice picture. Thanks for keeping us company.

I'm sorried about Mamie. It's been 14 days since I've seen her.

I went early and caught them off-guard again. I'm confusing them. Since they started coming to the door, I worry about attracting too much attention. Someone might not like it and make a fuss with the manager. Maybe I should start using the back door?

It's so pleasing to see Red waiting with the others. He is so unafraid right now that he even eats with the other cats, instead of standing back and waiting. Usually I remember to give Henry a little pile of his own, right at his feet. Could never do that with Red though, he runs if I get within six feet of him.

You know Elsa is the Black Cat among my kitties in my photos, right? She came to live with us and is a wonderful cat.

I hope Mamie shows up.

Hi Kluchetta -- I know about Elsa because of the Paws and Reflect threads that you post on. I go there too sometimes. It's great the way you've adopted so many rescued cats. Even with their "issues" they are wonderful companions.

Yesterday I was petting my big boy, Dude, and noticed he had some matted fur. Not surprising -- he has long long fur. (The cats seemed to expect a cold winter, because they are all bundled up in their thick coats.)

Tonight I put some scissors in my pocket when I went downstairs. I managed to cut off one mat, but when I tried to get the other he didn't like it. I picked him up and put him in a better position, but this time he hissed and feinted a bite. I let him go. I'll get him tomorrow!

When we marched to the feeding bench tonight, Oscar and Alfie stayed behind. I went back to see what was happening and they were eating something from the sidewalk. I tried to figure out what it was. It looked like small pieces of corn torilla that had been fried. No smell, so I don't think it was meant for cats.

Roll Call: Alfie, Blackie, Dude, Henry, Josesito, Lady Day, Louie, Oscar, Sneakers. 9 Total.

Remember I wrote that Alfie and Oscar were eating stuff from the sidewalk last night? It looked like little pieces of corn tortilla friend in oil.

Tonight Alfie did not show up to dinner and Oscar showed up but didn't eat.
Now I feel like a stupid jerk not to have cleaned up that stuff and kept some of it. It's all gone now, someone else must have cleaned it up. Oh, please, everyone send healing vibes to my boys.

MAMIE SHOWED UP!!

Please pray for my boys.

This isn't a regular post, but I just had to let you know that Oscar and Alfie are OK.

I went out at 5am to see if I could find Alfie. I called and called for him and he came with Louie. I was thinking it was Friday when the maintenance crew comes, but it was Thursday, so I don't know why he didn't come.

Oscar is still sick and I'm taking him to the vet on Saturday.

Thank you for all your good wishes. Oh, and yes, I was so relieved to see Mamie. I could hardly believe my eyes.

Hi all, this is a regular post and I'm glad of it.

All my little fuzzie-wuzzies were there waiting tonight Iwell except for Red and Mamie) and I was happy to see them.

I was very worried about Alfie and Oscar. I still may take Oscar to the vet tomorrow, if I can get ahold of him when my daughter comes. We had planned to take my indoor cat, Graycie, anyway.

I've always tended to get carried away with my emotions at times. It's amazing how very fond and committed you can get to these little ones. Even the ones that won't come closer than five feet and run if you look at them.

Thanks for reading my posts, guys.

THE CAT AND THE MOON
by: W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)
    • THE cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
      The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
      Troubled his animal blood.

      Minnaloushe runs in the grass
      Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
      When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
      Maybe the moon may learn,
      Tired of that courtly fashion,
      A new dance turn.

      Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
      From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?

      Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
      Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon His changing eyes.

A beautiful night tonight. When I went out the sky was indigo blue and the moon was just a sliver short of full and silvery with little Venus right next to it.

All my cats showed up tonight! Mamie was sitting on the rooftop silhouetted by the night sky, looking very catly and beautiful.

Red has undergone quite a change. Lately he not only comes almost every night, but he runs to the bench with the other cats and when I call their names he does a drop and roll like Louie-Louie. I always find that so charming. Then he shares a pile of food with the other cats instead of hanging back and waiting till everyone is through. I wonder if our encounter in the parking lot before he skittered into the storm drain made a difference.

No vet visits today. I thought my daughter was going to call me, but didn't realize my house phone ringer had gotten turned off and my cell needed charging.
Graycie will have to wait again.

Roll Call: Alfie, Blackie, Dude, Henry, Josesito, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Oscar, Red, Sneakers. 11 Total.
