I heard from the Pet Assistance League and she wanted me to call Actors and Others for financial help, first. I canâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t do that until tomorrow. I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t try to trap the little girl today. I left the trap upstairs. I think I want to get my inside girls up-to-date on their vacs before I bring anyone else upstairs.

I figured out why I was suddenly spilling so much – when I quit using the special little bowls I bought for Mamieâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s food, it unbalanced the tray I use. So I used them tonight and sure enough, no spills.

Everyone came running to me tonight and I guarded Mamie until she seemed done. I sat out so long that I saw not only Louie come and eat, but also saw Red slink slowly up on his tummy and eat. I just sat and waited for them to get their fill. A lot of the cats were still coming and going nibbling mostly at the dry food, including Mamie.

Crystal teaches high school and one of her students likes to do carpentry. I asked her if he would make some cat shelters for me and he seems interested. Hope. Hope. Hope.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Twelve total.

Actually, although people say that it is a good deed, and I'll get some sort of spiritual compensation for it --- the truth is I love it and the compensation is immediate because it feels so wonderful to help these kitties and to have such great relationships with them.

I went ahead and merged all of these threads so that new people or people in the future can see the full story in one place.
The updates on caring for a feral colony are very helpful for others, as they can see how rewarding it is if they are considering doing it themselves.

Crystal and I went shopping this afternoon and didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t get back until nearly 7 p.m. When I walked in the gate I saw the cats sitting and looking toward the front door I usually come out of.
I said “kitty cats†and they all came running to me. I explained that I was going upstairs to get their food and would be right back. Actually, I had to feed my two inside and take a trip to the bathroom, then I got everything together to feed 12 cats. They were very relieved to see me come back.

Good news for tonight: Louie-Louie came running with the rest of them. He's not afraid of me anymore -- well, at least not AS afraid.

While I was setting them up, I thought about how awful it must be to doubt if the caregiver was going to show up. I know that Jose was very sick the last few months before he went to the hospital and I wonder how many nights they were not fed. He went to the hospital on Saturday and I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t know until the next Friday. What happened to them?

Crystal talked to the woodworking instructor at the school she teaches at and he is willing to let the kids make the shelters if I can pay for the supplies.
This might work out very well. The kind that Alley Cat Allies shows on the internet is big enough for 3-5 cats so we would need three for our guys. It is very cold by L.A. standards and started sprinkling while I was downstairs. They need shelter.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, (no Growltiger), Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Eleven total.

Thank you Heidi. You are right, this project is its own reward. Watching the cats interact and making relationships with them is just lovely.

Bobbie thank you sweetheart, it is so hard when I go to bed at night and I think of my little loves huddled under bushes or curled up on concrete floors. I just about want to cry. Then I start looking for another way to get shelters for them and I feel better.

What a wonderful miraculous evening it was! Lady Day was brushing against my legs and let me pet her as she swished by,
and then to my astonishment so did Bonita! Then beautiful Tiger, Crystalâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s favorite, made those beautiful kittenish meows to me and let me pet him a long time – he even purred! I was blissed out by all this gratitude and affection.

Otherwise it was an ordinary evening except cold.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growtiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Twelve total.

Had an uh-oh moment tonight.
There is a new cat, that I may have mistaken for Red at times. He is very dark – maybe grey and possibly with white paws and face mask. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m going to call him Bumper. No reason, just the name that popped into my head.

Little Mamie wanted to eat under the bench tonight, so I put her food there. I noticed that sweet Lady Day follows me when I fill the water bowls.
When I came to the apartment building front door little Jose sat there looking directly in. I waited to see if he wanted to come in, saying “come on, come on†but he finally said “Meow,†and left. Theyâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]re so expressive! I wish he would bring Mamie in. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m worried sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s attracting male cats for something besides food. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ll have to call Joyce, she helped me with traps when I was doing it before.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Bumper, Eleanor, (no Growltiger), Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, (no Red) Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Eleven total.

Any intact female cats are going to draw the intact males....time to have her and her male suiters treated to a spay/neuter.

Disaster looms.
Walking through the garden tonight I heard the kind of meow a cat makes that means “get away, you’re annoying me,” right away I thought of Mamie and Bumper. Sure enough, it was Mamie and a grey tuxedo cat after her. I’ve got to get a trap that works very quickly. I don’t think I can bear having a pregnant cat spayed again. I’ve done it twice, and it’s heartbreaking. Still -- more kittens is another kind of heartbreak and Mamie isn’t even full-grown yet. I wish that dumb trap I have worked.
I’d have her spayed and back home by now.

Feeding the cats is still fun.
It’s so cute to see them come running each in their own way, first Mamie, then Jose, come from the right, then the middle-roaders – Blackie, Zachary, Eleanor, then from the left in runs Lady Day and Bonita then Tiger comes running from the recreation building on the right all the way across to the bench on my left. Then far down the sidewalk come Sneakers and now Louie-Louie who drops and rolls on the sidewalk. Growltiger also likes to drop and roll, but he never runs. Red still waits in the shadows

I’ve been watching Eleanor closely and she is eating regularly now. She just wanted to see if she could scare me I guess.

Louie challenged Growltiger over a pile of kibble tonight, and Growltiger backed down. It was strange, because Growltiger is almost twice as big; but he is gentle and easy going like so many orange cats, and Louie is an edgy nervous little thing.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary.
Twelve total.

Whoa! Another high noon moment today between Louie and Growltiger. All the other cats are just like “What the heck?†and backing off. Little Mamie was hiding under the bench, like sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s next. Louie really wants to be Top Cat.
He also challenged Red and won. Later, I saw him raising his paw to Josecito whoâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s been here since birth! I can understand getting Growltiger and Red to back off, because they are not really part of the colony – but Josecito? Heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s been here from birth – Bonita is his mother and Tiger and Sneakers his siblings. I guess Louie wants to be Border Patrol like Whitey.

The people here can be very mean and petty. I had three water “bowls†for the cats. I use quotation marks because they are really just plastic water or milk jugs with the tops cut off. Someone decided that one of them couldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t be allowed. First I found it tossed from its spot. I filled it and put it back. The next day it was gone. How petty can anyone get? Why do they mind these things so much? .

Katie, I finally caught up with this thread, and I love it! Keep up the good work, and keep up the journal. Like someone else said, it's a great learning tool for others.

I'm on the edge of my seat to see if you catch Mamie!

The cats were unusually calm tonight when they came to greet me. They settled down to eat very quietly. Then while I was filling their (now two!) water bowls, they all disappeared.
Individual cats wandered back and wandered away again, but it was strange. Since they werenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t there I decided to put the whole plate of canned food next to the dry, and go upstairs. Two of them ran over and started to eat it as soon as it was moved! Like it was brand new food!

I love cats! They are so hilarious!

Yep...good for you for catching that, most don't.

Just know that you are doing the work of angels, you really are. You are the sun and the moon to those kitties even if they aren't capable of showing you with purrs and headbutts.

BTW, my favorite name of your kitties is Growltiger...I love that!

The cats and I were all miserable tonight.
They were their usual hyper selves when I came out. They settled down okay, until Louie started his
“I wanna be Top Cat,†hijinks again. That wasnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t what made us miserable though – it was the cold sprinkling rain. I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t know the temps but for us, in L.A. itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s cold.
Some of you would probably laugh at how wimpy we are.

When it started sprinkling the cats started trying to decide which they wanted more – to stay dry or to eat fast before all their yummy food got all wet.
Of course, I scraped the dry food off the sidewalk and took it over to the rec building where the overhanging roof keeps it dry. Then I took the wet food over there too. It was better than eating in the rain, but I couldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t make it warm for them.

It makes me want those shelters more. I went to the library today with the purpose of printing out the plans, but ended up running all over the library and checking out 5 books, 3 CDs and 3 DVDs, but not getting the plans printed out. Sometimes I just donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t focus.

Joyce is coming Wednesday with two traps, a big one and a small one.
Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m thinking that Mamie might not be intimidated by a smaller one. Just please, please, please, donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t let her be pregnant.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Zachary Twelve total.

Hi Clixpix, I studied journalism in college and took some photography classes, so that's probably why I guessed. Growltiger's name comes from the show "Cats" and was a poem by T. S. Eliot first. I'm glad you like reading my diary.
