CATS OF COLONIA DE LAS ROSAS

In 2002 when I moved into this seniors apartment building, I discovered that there was a colony of stray/feral cats living in the garden. The man who fed them, Jose, got sick at one point and I took care of them for four months. When he came back, he took over again until just recently when he got sick again. He may not be able to come back this time and I am now feeding the cats. This record starts in 2002 when I fed them the first time. This is the roll call at that time.

Eleanor is a tortoise shell cat. She is probably related to Bonita, as sister, mother, aunt, etc. Blackie, Jose's cat, is her son.

Whitey was born to an abandoned mother in the garden. He’s a big favorite of both humans and the other cats because of his beauty and strength. He is quick to chase trespassing male cats out of the fences. He is well-known to gallivant outside his own territory, though. My own cat, Go Go, has the same mother by a later litter.

Although most people see the cats as a random group, all the cats in the garden were born here, and most are related. Norton is the exception. He came to garden, undernourished, dehydrated and hurt. After being fixed up and neutered, he stayed. He’s completely tame and will willingly climb into the lap of anyone who offers him food and friendship. He loves to talk and sounds like he's saying meow-wow. He has a rivalry with Whitey for the title of Handsomest Cat in the Garden.

Bonita has no rival for Great Mother of the Garden. She has six kittens in the garden – all the rest of the cats on this list. She’s a gorgeous calico. She’s been a very good mother, even resorting to having kittens on the roof of the building to keep them safe. It’s been very hard for her raising her kittens in a dangerous atmosphere, and having so many litters so fast. She has been sterilized, like all the other cats, so now she can rest on her laurels.

The first litter was born in early spring 2003 and is Tiger, Rosy and Sneakers. Tiger is one of the two orange males in the garden. He’s a big boy, but very gentle.

Rosy is a sweetie, too, but shyer. She is a tuxedo, with little white feet and a white mark on her face. She has long fur.

Sneakers is also a tuxedo, but unlike her sister has very short glossy black fur. She is very shy and likes to sit on top of the recreation building. Sneakers was pregnant several times but was not fortunate in finding good hiding places for her kittens. Her first litter seems to have been only one tuxedo boy that someone wet with a garden hose causing his death. Then another litter of five, four of them were taken from her and tossed to the bottom of the stairs of my building in a box. I was too stupid to handle the situation well, and gave the kittens to a foster human mother, but only one lived. She raised the fifth one, a tortoise shell and she found a home in Chinatown with the sister of a resident here.

Bootsie and happy-go-lucky Lucky were born in fall 2003. Bootsie is the third tuxedo. You can tell him from his older sisters by the tall boots on his back legs. Also he has white whiskers over his left eye and black ones over his right! He’s a very sweet guy who likes to be petted.

Lucky, his sister is all black although as a kitten she had brown tabby stripes on her sides. She’s a roamer, but always shows up for dinner. Like her brother, she loves to be singled out and petted. She’s also very playful and loves it when someone brings her toys. Lucky was sent to a private shelter to be adopted. She was the perfect cat – cute, sweet, affectionate, adventurous and playful.

There was a third cat in this litter that I called Honey because she was so very sweet. Unfortunately Honey just disappeared when the kittens were about a year old.

The next little was two kittens -- or maybe three. Josesito is orange and has white paws and chest. He was a ferocious kitten, and a little nervous about sharing his food and living space when his mom left him to have another litter. He’s very playful and on occasion allows petting as long as he can keep his four feet on the ground.

He had two siblings, Daisy -- and possibly Growltiger. When the litter was only about 5-6 weeks old, Bonita abandoned Daisy because she was pregnant again. I brought Daisy inside and she was adopted through the internet. I strongly suspect that Growltiger was taken by some children nearby and although he has a family and home, often visits and is still part of the group. Daisy and Growltiger are both dilute orange or buff tabbys with tuxedo markings.

Bonita’s last litter, all with white feet, chest and face, one grey, one black, and one orange were adopted by a private shelter to tame and find homes for them when they were only three months old. I cried to see them go because they were the last kittens. I know that not having kittens was the goal, but I still cried.

That was the end of my involvement until recently when Jose became sick again. In late March I began a journal. I'm making another post in this thread for that.

UPDATE JANUARY 29, 2006

Whitey disappeared in September 2004. Because I was worried that he might have been hurt by Mr. Flores, (who killed two cats with a slingshot), I took Bootsie, Rosy and Norton to a non-kill shelter. They were the most affectionate cats and I miss them very much.

Bonita, Eleanor, Josecito, Sneakers, and Tiger are still here. Plus we have Mamie, Zach, Lulu and sometimes Growltiger – all strays that have joined the family.

Mamie joined the group as a tiny kitten not more than six weeks old. She is a black and grey tabby with white mittens. She’s about 4-6 months old now.

Zach was a sick boy when he came, undernourished and dehydrated. He still crouches as though he is unhappy. He’s very thin and lanky. He’s tame enough to allow an occasional petting.

Lulu is a little girl, white with grey tabby patches – between six months to a year. She’s very shy and won’t come near me. She only approaches the food after most of the other cats have finished...

Growltiger has been around for awhile, but does not show up every night. He is very healthy looking and probably has a regular home. He is a very good-looking buff tabby cat. He might be Josecito’s litter mate.

Because Jose is sick I am feeding the cats starting on Friday, January 27.

Friday January 27

Zach and Growltiger did not show up. It was the first time I saw Lulu. In addition, Jose’s cats, Blackie and Lady-Baby were there.

Thanks for posting, Katie. Those who know Katie and her cats (from posts in Paws and Reflect - My meowmy is starving me and Hello from Jasper) know how she feels about them. AND what we would like to do to that Mr. Flores!!!

Also, her siggy phrase has a poignant story behind it, too. COuld you tell it to the rest, Katie?

(And a Happy Birthday, too!

Thank you, Jan, for the birthday wish. Actually I miss Whitey, Norton, Bootsie and Rosy very much. The garden felt empty without them for a long time. Grief still wells up when I think of them.

"It doesn't matter what color their fur is -- all cats are magnificent."

A little 6-year-old girl said this to me and it stayed in my mind because I thought she was going to end by saying they were all beautiful, but she said that they are magnificent "because they have teeth and can hiss and have claws they can put out and tails that can stand up or swish." She thought catliness itself is magnificent just like a true cat-lover.

This little girl was accidently shot in a drive-by shooting. She was just walking out of a 7-11 eating a popsicle her father bought her. The man who shot her was caught and arrested.

Zach and Growltiger did not show up. It was the first time I saw Lulu. In addition, Joseâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s cats, Blackie and Lady-Baby were there.

Saturday, January 28

Zach and Growltiger were present as well as Blackie and Lady-Baby.

I love taking care of the cats and have missed it. I got so excited I went to a thrift store and bought little bowls for them to eat from. I know: Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m out of control.

Sunday, January 29, 2006

I wonder if Jose will be coming back soon?

Itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s hard to tell how much food to take out. Friday I took too much and had to leave a big pile of mixed dry and wet food under the bench. Then last night I had two more cats and all the food was gone even though I took exactly the same amounts of both wet and dry as the day before. Then tonight, there was a lot left over again.

Lulu and Mamie did not show up, but when I went out later on my way to the store, Mamie was there and I took her food. Everyone else was there, including Joseâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s two.

Monday, January 30, 2006

It is not looking good for Jose. Emma is thinking of a nursing home for him because he doesnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t care for himself and she can no longer care for him. Meaning I need to start looking for funding for cat food.

All the cats showed up tonight, but I went out too early. There was a lot of traffic going in and out of the gardens as people came and picked up the grandchildren from the grandparent-babysitters. Because of that I had to wait a long time for Lulu and Mamie again. It would be better to go out about 7 p.m. and I went at 6. I thought I had figured out a way to feed both girls their special kitten food, but it is not working well. Lulu especially tends to run far and fast when I approach her. She wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t let me get within eight feet of her. That makes it hard to give her the specific food she needs. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m still thinking she might be pregnant.

I am continuing a diary of the cat colony I care for. The cats names and description and how I came to care for them are in the first part. There are pictures of some of them in the Fur Pictures Thread.

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

Vickie brought a big bag of Friskies for the cats today. Emma told her to buy it for me. Jose is still in the hospital with high blood pressure and is suffering a lot of mental confusion.

Went out at 7 p.m. tonight as I planned and everyone was there. Didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t see Lulu at first, but she was there, waiting at a distance like she always does. I took her food to her usual waiting place and she came over and ate. It seems hopeless giving Mamie kitten food because as soon as I put it down the grown cats go over to see what it is. When I chase them away Mamie runs too and thus it goes.

Wednesday, February 1, 2006

Took the food out about 7 p.m. and all the cats start running toward me. Even Mamie and Lewie (formerly Lulu and definitely not pregnant!) were waiting. First I gave sweet Mamie her food at a distance then all the other cats. Little Lewie was too frightened to come to his place to eat.

I discovered that Lulu was not a girl when he was confronted by Growltiger and I separated them. Lewie is terrified of Growltiger who definitely sees himself as King of the Garden. So now how to trap and neuter Growltiger, Lewie and Zach? And how to make sure Lewie, who is still very young – maybe still a kitten -- gets to eat?

Saturday, February 4, 2006

Fed the cats at 4:30 p.m. because I am going to Crystalâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s for dinner, etc. Bonita, Lady-Baby, Blackie, Zach, Eleanor and Tiger showed up. I also saw Sneakers and Louie-Louie (his new name) on the roof of the recreation building. Left kitten chow for Mamie near Johnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s garden where Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve fed her before when I had canned kitten food for her.

I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t make the usual ceremony of it – which is unnecessary anyway. I just left two plates of wet food – one of Joseâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s big cans – and a mountain of Friskies under the garden bench where they eat. The canned food was gone when I got home, but there was still some kibble.

Saw Mamie and Josecito when I came home at 8:30. Most of the kitten chow was gone, but the question remains of who ate it.

Growltiger is the only cat I did not see.

6:30 A.M. It finally stopped raining and I wanted to see if I could find Eleanor and Mamie. I also wanted to check and see if they ate their dinner from last night. First thing when I walked out the front door Mamie saw me and ran to me with her sweet kittenish meow. Then I spotted Eleanor. I checked and all the food from last night was eaten. I went inside and got more food for them. I took a box to put it in and put the food in my catâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s water bowl. How little I understand my cats. They wouldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t eat with the food in the box because they couldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t see around them while they ate!

Eleanor had disappeared and I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t see her again, but Mamie ate when I put the food near Johnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s garden. They look so bedraggled with their wet coats. I saw Zachary and he couldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t stop telling me how miserable he was from the safety of the rec. bldg, roof!

I found Sneakers and Louie-Louie near the air compressor next to Bldg. 3. The cats often take refuge under the air compressor which gives ME the willies. Still, they were completely dry – the only ones that were.

Roll Call: Bonita, Eleanor, Josecito, Lady Day, Louie-Louie, Mamie, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. . Nine total

Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m writing this on Wednesday morning, but it is about last night. The cats were all in a good and playful mood and came running toward me with their usual enthusiasm. The usual problems of letting Mamie eat her kitten food, and of Louie being over-cautious, but otherwise everything was okey-dokey.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Josecito, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary.Eleven total.

I have two questions about my kitties. First is Mamie. She appeared here in the garden without relatives when she was only about 5-6 weeks old. Sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s probably about six months now. Sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s terrified of humans and of most cats. She has made friends with only one cat – Josecito. She is OK with Blackie who is Josecitoâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s buddy. From other threads on the cat site Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve gotten the impression that maybe she was born and raised with humans then brought by human hands and abandoned here – probably because they saw the other cats here. What can I do, if anything, to help her become more trusting of the other cats? Or should I try to trap her and socialize her in the hopes of finding her a home?

The other question is my little Zachary. He is clearly a stray. He talks to me and occasionally allows a little petting. His body language is always so uncomfortable, though, and he seems to lack that inner self-confidence that most cats have. When he first showed up here he was almost dead he was so undernourished and dehydrated. I was afraid to bring him into my apartment because I thought he might be very sick. How can I help him feel better? Maybe the only solution for him is to bring him inside, too?

Report for tonight -- Everyone is fine and things were as usual tonight. The same problems -- getting the adult cats to leave Mamie alone so she can eat without running away. ALTHOUGH, I did see her come to the adult food when hers was finished and she was still hungry. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve never seen her to that before without Josecitoâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s support. Atta, girl, Mamie! Little Louie-Louie is also getting a teensy bit braver.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Josecito, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Eleven total.

Keep it up! I love reading this. Mine don't even SHOW themselves to me,
LOL. Just trapped one, kittens on the way (rescued and pulled out of
a bad situation just in time. The little ones are lucky. If Mom comes around
she may be very lucky too...)

I lost one, on the highway day before I trapped. Bummed me
out alot! But still, I am now on my way to controlling the
numbers...

Hugs and best vibes for your colony.

Thank you so muich. Did you save a pregnant cat or just the kittens, either way it's a big save! I'm so sorry about the one you lost.

Mine are in a garden but I've lost kittens from being wet with garden hoses by gardeners (on purpose) and one mother abandoned a litter of four and I lost one. Two adults just "disappeared" which upset me because one of the tenants here was convicted of killing two cats with a slingshot.

I almost smothered your good deeds. Congratulations again!

I just watched a Senegalese movie adaptation of the opera Carmen with my daughter, and it just blew us away.

From the dampness and the chill, it thought it was going to rain, but it was fine. The kitties were ok except for Growltiger who showed up in a Top Cat
mood. He growled at the other cats that tried to share his plate with him even though Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m sure he gets fed at home. He chased Louie and Red away and wouldnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t let Bonita eat with him either. Then he challenged Red and sent him running.
What a guy! I was very angry with him, but Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve noticed that expressing anger at one cat frightens all the others
so I held back, however unfair I thought it was.

Mamie, however, is grateful when I protect her food, and I noticed (thanks to another thread on ferals) that she feels very safe if I stand just inches from her, as long I keep my back to her.

Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m changing Josecito to Jose -- after all heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s a big boy now and protecting other cats. He's a really good boy.

No, I trapped a feral Mom about to give birth. We
weren't even sure she WAS preggers she's that small
and thin! Poor baby. I am going to try and grab the
other Moms preggers right now (at least 2 I know of)
and hold till kittens are born, and Mom's are fixed.
Then back out they go, as much as I'd love to keep -
I can't. So I am TNRing.

Are you feeding your pregnant kitties kitten chow? It's the best thing for them along with some canned food.

They're so appealing and vulnerable in that position, aren't they?

I’m actually writing this on Saturday morning. It was a rainy day yesterday and I decided to feed the cats early – around 5 pm. I also wanted to start getting Mamie ready to be trapped. So first I took out her trap, with the delicious Fancy Feast that all the cats seem to love. I had asked Vickie to wash the trap so it was smell-free. Then the newspaper and Feliway. No catnip because she’s still a kitten. After I took her trap down, I came back for the food, which I spilled in the hallway. Set the wet food plates under our bench and the dry in a place that doesn’t get wet. Then I went back upstairs and got a broom and dust pan and cleaned up the hallway.

The cats were confused by this strange arrangement, but they went along with it. Zachary was under the bench and he looked at me like what, all for me? It was cute. Blackie went in Mamie’s cage and ate half her food. I hadn’t seen Mamie yet.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Lady Day, Louie, Zachary. Six total

Went down again about 8:30 to pick up the trap. Mamie was there, and the food was gone. Of course, someone else could have gone in the trap and eaten it. I put a little dry food by John’s garden for Mamie because Sneakers is still intent on showing she’s top cat and not letting Mamie eat the adult cat food.

Lady Day and Zachary were feeling affectionate and let me pet them. I didn’t make my usual mistake of picking them up, which always sets back the socializing by weeks. I was in bed by 9 pm.

Additional Roll Call: Growltiger, Jose, Mamie, Sneakers. Four more, ten total.

Saturday, March 04, 2006

Still working on trapping Mamie, who is so cute. She sits up with her tail wrapped around her front paws and looks at me with love in her eyes now. Tonight Crystal was here when it came time to feed them so she helped me go out with the food and trap. It didn’t help. I still spilled cat food, even the canned stuff all over the elevator floor, and everything came to a stop while we cleaned it up. Crystal told her boyfriend on the cell, ‘Yeah, I’m here with my mother sweeping up cat food on the elevator, that’s what happens when I visit my mother.” Well at least I don’t make her clean up the litter!

Little Mamie was there when we got downstairs. I put the trap down and she was in it lickety-split.
Like most of them, she looooves Fancy Feast. That’s when I got the love look. The other cats settled down quickly -- all lined up facing us because Crystal was an unknown factor to them. I walked Crystal to her car and when I got back, they were nearly all through and all the wet food was gone.

When I got back upstairs I left phone messages to my spay/neuter financiers (lol).
As soon as I get the funding, I know Mamie will go into her trap and I can just pick up Growltiger – so that’s two and then two to go.

Crystal still wants to adopt one (or two) but only if her landlord will reduce the security fee. So I suggested we tell the landlord that because of Katrina the shelters are begging people to adopt, but Crystal thinks the landlord will want some sort of evidence, like a pamphlet or letter from a shelter saying they are asking landlords to reduce their security fees.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Eleven total.

I heard from the Pet Assistance League and she wanted me to call Actors and Others for financial help, first. I canâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t do that until tomorrow. I didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t try to trap the little girl today. I left the trap upstairs. I think I want to get my inside girls up-to-date on their vacs before I bring anyone else upstairs.

I figured out why I was suddenly spilling so much – when I quit using the special little bowls I bought for Mamieâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s food, it unbalanced the tray I use. So I used them tonight and sure enough, no spills.

Everyone came running to me tonight and I guarded Mamie until she seemed done. I sat out so long that I saw not only Louie come and eat, but also saw Red slink slowly up on his tummy and eat. I just sat and waited for them to get their fill. A lot of the cats were still coming and going nibbling mostly at the dry food, including Mamie.

Crystal teaches high school and one of her students likes to do carpentry. I asked her if he would make some cat shelters for me and he seems interested. Hope. Hope. Hope.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Twelve total.

What an idiot I am! The trap is not working right. It trips too easily. But I ignored this problem and set it up for Mamie because it was raining and I didn’t want to leave her outside again tonight. Sure enough it tripped before she was completely in it and terrified her. She ran far away and now she doesn’t want anything to do with it. I turned it around and opened the other end with it tripped. Growltiger, a BIG tomcat, squeezed himself in and ate all her food. I let him do it, trying to lure Mamie into thinking it was safe in spite of her terrifying experience. The only good thing? She didn’t get hurt. Now I have to cancel her Wednesday appointment and try again after a week or two, hoping she forgets by then. In the meantime I can probably get Growltiger and keep the appointment.

I called Actors and Others and they are subsidizing the spay/neuters $5 per male and $10 for Mamie. Not much. I’m waiting for Pets Assistance League to call back. The cost is very reasonable $40 for Mamie and $30 for each male.

It was raining lightly so the cats didn’t like eating on the sidewalk. I put the wet food under the bench. and the dry food in a little spot where it was dry near the recreation building.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Eleven Total.

Did anyone miss me? I apologize, I was out of sorts for a few days, but donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t worry – I still fed the cats!

I did not succeed in getting either Mamie or Growltiger to the vets. But in the process of picking Growltiger up and trying to stuff him into a cat carrier (the soft kind) I realized that his ear problem has gotten a lot worse, sooooo Sunday night, Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m trying again for Monday. He needs to see a vet for more reasons than one.

Mamie has decided to eat with the grown cats and Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve pretty much given up on the kitten chow. I put the bowl of kitten chow right next to the pile of adult food and she ignores her own special little bowl and eats the adult chow. Last night I ended up giving the kitten chow to Eleanor who loves it, and Growltiger, Louie and Sneakers also ate some. But little Mamie – “No thanks, Mom; Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m a big girl now!â€

I worry a bit about Eleanor. I suspect she is our oldest cat, and quite often now I have to call her to come and eat. She seems to lack some verve. I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t know what I will do if she gets sick, because she is very distrustful and wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t usually let me closer than 3-4 feet before she takes off. Although she will sit and let me talk to her and blink very sweetly at me. Nothing is as sweet and tender as a quiet moment with a cat.

Last night, Louie sat close enough for me to talk to him for awhile. That was a breakthrough with him!

Roll Call for the last three nights: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary. Twelve total.

I posted pictures of Eleanor, Lady Day and Tiger in the Fur Pictures Only thread.

I TOUCHED MAMIE!!!! A very brief wisp of a touch while she was eating.

In the meantime, Eleanor is worrying me a lot. She didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t eat at all last night. She came and kept us company and even sat over the food, but I watched closely and she didnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t eat at all.
Now Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m more worried than before. She is not a cat that is easy to approach. Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m going to have to trap her to get her to the vet, and the vet will have to be familiar with feral cats and very patient and understanding. Sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s always been so feisty and independent -- itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s hard to see her like this. Then I had the awful thought, “What if she has something contagious?â€

I saw little Mamie playing with Red a little bit. It was cute – but sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s reached kitten-bearing age and Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m worried.

The carpenter-student has taken a job and wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t be able to help build shelters. Last night was in the low 40â€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s and raining. Thatâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s very cold for us in L.A.

There is one man here that the cats are terrified of. He throws rocks at the cats sometimes, and stomps his feet. I wonder if he has done more. They all run away and hide when he comes by.

Roll Call: Blackie, Bonita, Eleanor, Growltiger, Jose, Lady Day, Louie, Mamie, Red, Sneakers, Tiger, Zachary.Twelve total.

I am going to keep up with this, Katie. You have a special place in Heaven for your love for these kitties. (I believe in Heaven.)
