Puppy to Adult Chow

My little Angel will be a whole year old next month!!
When I got her at age 5 months she was malnurished and below the average weight. I was wondering if I should leave her on puppy food for a little while longer or make the switch to adult? I was also going to ask for opinions on other dog foods, I'm currently using Science Diet Puppy Small Bites but I was thinking of Chicken Soup....


(I'm debating changing the cat to Innova.... from SD)

What is Angel( breed) ? what is her adult wt ??

Angel is a ShihTzu. She is currently 9 lbs. (at 5 months she was 4 lbs!!) The Vet said she will always be a little small....

you might want to check with your vet first. Well, actually you know this already, but is your pup still healing from being malnurished and underweight? If there are still some issues from her being in that condition she may need to stay on puppy food for a bit longer. Puppy food is loaded with all the goods they need to keep up with their fast growth spurts. usually it's safe to switch from pup to adult food at one yr old. I did it with my lab. It's always best to make those simple phones calls and usually a tech will tell you whats best and can also make good recommendations for food. My dog is on Dog Chow, nothing super but it keeps him healthy and regular.

Thanks puppycat. I'll give the vet a ring. She's developed quickly since DH and I took her in. She is a SMART little thing!!! I'm sure being on puppy chow longer won't hurt anything I'll just be sure to get her plenty of exercise so she doesn't get tubby.

Tlak to the vet but my knowledge from an old country vet as well as my current vet is small breeds ( adult wt under 20 lbs) can either be left on puppy food for the first 18 months or moved to adult at 6 months depending on activity leval..


May I suggest you look at Nutros ultra adult or natural choice chn rice and oatmeal... Ultra is holistic ... the other is a very basic formula that I find small dog s do well with

I think switching her to an "all life stages" food is a good bet at this point. Chicken Soup is an excellent food, and much better quality than SD (compare the ingredients and you will be shocked), so I would put her on that at this point.

coat health wise chn soup adult which is the all stage would be worse than SD by a % .... otherwise chn soup is great .. I did that with Gigi but her caot went down on it..

I've been checking out Royal Canin and I see they have a chow for Shih Tzus!!! (that's what I have BTW lol). Do you think this would be worth getting or is it all a ploy??

it is debatable ... if you can afford it as I find it about double the price of other good premiums ... give it a whirl and see.. dogs are easier than cats to change from food to food
