Hello everyone!!
Our kitten is only 6 months old and she always wants to run out the door when we come in or out. My question is will she outgrow this and if so in the meantime what can I do to try and stop that before summer comes and the kids are in and out ALL the time? She is fixed and we are getting a nametag for her collar but Im so afraid that she will get out and not come back home and that would just break our hearts. Right now we have to come in the door with our hands down because as soon as she hears the key in the door shes there.lol
Thanks for any advice or input you can give......
Liz

Ok well I guess we must all have kitties that like to run out the door and there probablly is no solution except to be really careful.

Since no one else with throw in their two cents I guess I will. I don't know if there is a solution to that problem. Our kitty of 2 years still does it every know and then. We have sort of diverted any of her play area or eating place away from the door. When we come home from work or where ever we have been, we never greet her as soon as we walk in. In other words walk into another part of the house or away from the door before showing him/her affection. This will hopefully break that connection she has with the door. I know it seems she just wants to go out side and explore which is a big part of it. But kittens can be easily distracted so just by leading her away from teh door and playing with her should make her forget about it, at least enough for someone to go in or out. I hope that works. Thats all I could come up with

We had a cat that tried to get out a lot, and I kept a can of compressed air right by the door. I would "spritz" it going out, and then the first thing in the door is my hand (or I leave it on the step outside) and spritz it coming in. They don't like that nose much!

Hi, this is pretty radical, but it's been considered. What are the chances of making a new little porch (5 x 5) with an outer door so that if she runs out the inner door, you can train the kids to first get her back inside before going out the outer door?

Maybe I wasn't clear - the enclosure wasn't for her (to stay in), but just a 'trap' to keep her from running into the street. Many people have enclosed porches, landings, etc. (especially in cold climates) to keep cold air from getting inside (e.g. the outer door is closed behind you before the inner 'house' door is opened).
