Hi. I was wondering what mouth ulcers in cats look like. I am looking after a friends cat whilst she is on holiday (for 3 weeks) andit seems to be having a little difficulty chewing. When I looked into her mouth, on both sides she has a small lump behind the bottom canine on each side, they are not raw sores, but just look...lumpy almost like a blister shape. The cat is 15 years old, and had a proper clean of her teeth dont last summer under anesthetic, and has been fed dental treats ofen since then. Are these ulcers, or something more serious? And how would you go about treating them. Is there anything you can get over the counter for it or does she need a vet vist? Please help!

It is possible that the stress of changing enviroments and beeing without her mommy caused an ulcer or 2 to pop up. I have never experienced them myself, so I don't know how they are treated, but a vet visit is called for here. I hope it's not serious--let us know what the vet says

Thanks...Ive looked after her before, and spend a lot of time around at her house and she doesnt seem upset. So I dont really think its stress...I havent been able to get in touch with a vet yet (theyre closed) but I did a search on the net and came up with that it may be a dental problem, and could be solved with antiseptic gels. What sort of gel would I use to help this?
I'll try and get a vets appointment soon, but I was wondering if there was anything I could use to treat it at home too.

I wouldn't recommend using any over the counter gels, without consultation with the vet! I could increase the problem!

I hope you see the vets soon and get her on the propper treatment soon!

Let us know how it goes!

We rescued a little kitten, whose mouth had ulcerations. They sound real similar to what you are describing. The Vet checked him out, and ordered a medication liquid for the little kitty and within a few days, you could see SO much improvement! I hope somehow, you are able to get the kitty in to see a vet.

FYI, I just read an article about dental care in February's "Cat Fancy", and it says that cats with severe kidney failure (common in geriatric cats) can have uremia ("urine in the blood"), and frequently develop ulcers on their gums, tongues, and lips.
Since your friend's cat is 15, I would have her checked by a vet immediately.
