Hey everyone-

My new addition, Raphael, has chronic soft stool. He's been on Flagyl for...forever, so I'm taking him to my regular vet to see if we can think of another plan for firming it up (he HAS been wormed, btw), but in the meantime...

What's a good, super premium canned food and a good super premium dry food that would go easy on his GI tract?

California natural or Natural choice for dry ... basically any one meat to one grain food, or two meat two grain food

felidea s new chn and rice may be avail to you it looks great

you did say the new boy is 7?? if so look at senior foods

I know you feed some excellent wet foods... if you can find sensible choice in canned it is great for tummy issues... I like felideas chn and rice wet as well as pro pac beef .... with Kandie who is 17 I try to get as low grain as possible to go with her mainly raw diet

I use this as well!
I thought he was sick for a long time, but it turns out that he's got tummy issues. Royal Canin keeps things pretty solid, and he loves it.

Has Raphael had a stool sample tested for all the usual suspects such as Giardia, Coccidia etc?

Something that can help is canned pumpkin - a teaspoon a couple of times a day.

Yep, he's been vetted several times, but was VERY stressed at the shelter.

He also eats Science Diet which has given my previous cats soft stool as well, so I'm hoping that a food change will be good.

Maybe I'll try Felidae first (since my kitties are used to the chx and rice new formula) and if that doesn't work, I'll move on to Cal Natural, which has a good ingredients list for sensitive babies.

Another thought - perhaps the long-term antibiotics have disturbed the balance of natural bacteria in his digestive tract?

You might want to ask the vet if it's OK to give him a bacterial supplement like Bene-bac gel (available at most pet supply stores). If the vet says it's OK, give him the gel at least 4 hours before or after the antibiotic, never at the same time as the antibiotic or it will cancel out the effects.

I was actually thinking that that might be the case.

Or the Science Diet, since I have NEVER had good luck with it (although Leo was on one of their "Natural" varieties and he was ok) and Gracie had the same issues, which cleared up as soon as I changed her food over.

And there's always the thought of giving him punkin or cat grass to see if he needs some extra fiber...

i gave the bene-bac to Java - the vet had suggest yogurt, but i couldn't see any results with it. she was a stray, 3 1/2 months old - who knew WHAT she had been eating! anyway, after 2 rounds of antibiotics, she was still having gas & runny poops, altho they were somewhat better. i gave her the bene-bac according to the label directions - & that finally solved the problem!

Yes! ask pro-biotics to your vet, and maybe try Eukaneuba low-residue.
My two cats had horrible diarrhea for weeks, the vets tried everything and nothing worked, but when they started eating that, it got better really fast.
Good luck!
