I foster cats for the local SPCA, and recently took home a mom-to-be. The problem is, a few days after I took her home she came home with a horrible respiratory tract infection. I got her some antibiotics from her vet, but they don't seem to be helping and she hasn't eaten or drank anything for a day now. I'm worried about her and the lives of her unborn kittens. Any advice?

You might try steaming her in a small room with a humidifier or even the bathroom with the hot water only running through the shower. Sometimes that helps with the congestion. If the antibiotics she is taking aren't helping, then she needs another trip to the vet to determine the risk of other antibiotics - I don't want to speculate on the risks, your vet is the best person to handle such questions.

Have you tried chicken or turkey meat baby food? Sometimes you can get an anorexic cat to eat by smearing a little baby food on your fingers and letting them lick it off. If they won't take it on their own, try opening her mouth and smearing the baby food just between the 'cheek' and gum area, don't force it into her mouth.

Best of luck,

~gf~

I just tried the shower thing, and it worked! Thank you so much. She practically ate a whole small can of wet food. I hope this gives her a little more strength. I'll update with how she's doing. She seems a little more alert now.
