Cat is mean to people when Im not around, nice when I am

My cat is 7 yrs old and generally a very quiet, content cat. Problem is.. when I'm not around, if someone goes anywhere near him he hisses his head off at that. If I'm there, he acts nice as can be and will never hiss. What's his deal??

Sounds like he is just being a cat. He trusts people when you are there, and doesn't want to bother with them otherwise. Sometimes cats are just hard to figure out!
