What I am wondering is if that will ever become available to people who naturally have a problem gaining weight.

You mean to tell me all this started when some fat kid coughed on me in school????
Is that a joke or is it for real?

They have been thinking this for a while now. I think that If i didn't eat the wrong foods I wouldn't be overweight.

I've never heard of this before. It makes me think maybe there is a similar virus that has the opposite effect, in which case I most certainly have that one. Maybe there's a virus that makes people built like a superhero too.

It might explain why some fat people also have related health problems like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes and others don't. Maybe the sick ones were affected by the virus.

That would be nice....if they could come up with something to give us that would make the virus "go away".......but I highly suspect that my obesity is due to what I put in my mouth...cause when i stop overeating and exercise...I lose weight! I just need to DO IT!
Linda
PS Ryan....I`d be glad to make a "contibution" if you can figure out how to get it off my body and onto yours!

I don't really buy it. If they said genetics, yes I would agree with that. Mom and/or Dad were fat, they could possibly have passed on their fat gene to their child.
Or if they said a chemical imbalance, similar to bi-polar, where you believe you need to eat more or you just naturally eat more, then I would buy it.

But a virus? Come on...If the newsreport had left out the "Buy the fat virus test kit now" then it may have seem more plausible.

I really think these scientists are smoking a FAT pipe....

I used to have that one, but recently it's been trounced by the "mildly chubby virus"

Obesity is caused by eating too much and/or excercising too little. Very rarely, it is caused by a hormonal disorder. I work with many, many doctors. Not one of them thinks any different.
How does this explain skinny people who eat like pigs and don't excercise? Well, their distant ancestors would not have lived through times of famine...my ancestors, on the other hand must have been QUITE well prepared for famine. lol
Humans, like most animals, are biologically programmed to build up and hold onto their fat reserves, just in case times get tough. We even find high-fat, high-sugar foods to be the most pleasing to the palate. Trouble is, these days we don't NEED those biological pre-sets to crave fatty, sugary foods and to build up our fat reserves. That programming is d@mn hard to overcome. We simply haven't had to to evolve past it yet.
And...
Eventually, the vast majority of obese people will develop some sort of health problem related to their weight, be it as serious as a heart attack, or something as simple as early-onset osteoarthritis in their major weight-bearing joints.

Mildly chubby? You make that sound like it's a bad thing. Nothing's wrong with a little jiggly.

Wyan you are an incorrigible flirt.

Max was saying last night, he'd rather be with a woman with small boobs (natural) and larger hips, than a woman with big fake boobs and no hips. Just thinks it's more womanly. I'm kinda a combination of the two (NOT the fake part...lol), but he doesn't seem to mind

I think some obesity can be caused by illness - ie thyroid dysfunction etc - but that mostly it is diet and exercise (or lack thereof) related.

There is a show on telly here called `Life Support'. It is a satire of those DIY shows - you know, Better Homes and Gardens and so on. There is a character on it called `Dr Rudi' a South African doctor with the most hilariously overdone accent, who gives appallingly un-PC advice in his segment.

In his segment on obesity, he said, `I have a simple cure for obesity, which everyone will want to try' and he builds it up for a while. Findally the camera zooms right into his mouth and he just says `EAT LESS'. It's very funny

[hijack]Hmmmm... I know what incorrigible means, almost half sure about flirt, but what the heck is "findally"? .....Findally, Findally, Findally...................... Wait!....... I think I "findally" figured it out! That's two words you've taught me today!

By the way, that anecdote about that Dr. Rudi segment sounds really funny! [/hijack]

Oh GOD and I am always so careful of my proof-reading, too.

And I can't even edit it out now or your post won't make any sense.

Here's another word for you.....PICKY PICKY PICKY!!

Virus, schmirus! I'm chubby, due to midle age, a sedentary lifestyle and an inordinate fondness for chocolate.

PFT. I'ce lost 50 lbs just by gettin up off my arse and excercising, and eating right. I try to avoid anything made with dehydrogenated veg oils and high fructose corn syrup and eat LESS. Granted I'm using a program to do it (WW) because it's easier to monitor that way than it is to count calories ETC.

I'm just saying .. if I had the "fat virus" I probably wouldn't be able to love salads, sprouts and ham sandwiches, and I'd be living off of mayo and birthday cake.

That said, yes, it takes effort and a bit of money to eat right and be satiated, but there are ways to do it, and I think tht eating natural foods is the way to go.. If we were meant to eat super refined sugars and chemically created oils, they'd already occur in nature.

besides, if it were a virus, everybody in my family would be fat, instead of just me!
