Hello,

Please excuse me for posting this, but I have no other alternative. We are in desperate need of help for this little kitten.

I am a volunteer with Save the Kitties, Inc. and last weekend picked up 4 kittens to be fostered. They traveled from GA, rescued from the high kill shelter at Spalding to my house in Madison, WI, about 2,000 miles. At first everything was fine, kittens were in good health. 3 days later, 3 of the kittens were very sick and diagnosed with Panleukopenia, or Feline Distemper. Please, if you would like to read more about this highly contagious and deadly virus, click the link below.

Unfortunately, 2 of the kittens passed within 24-48 hours, but one is still hanging in there - Madison. In the under the bed picture, she is the one in the back.

Madison (named after her foster city) has been in isolation at the Veterinary Emergency Service in Middleton, WI and is undergoing extensive medical care. She is on day 6 of recovery but has a very long way to go. Her condition is at best guarded but is slowly making progress. She is very young, probably less than 8 weeks and a true little fighter. She is eating well and drinking and has a lot of spunk and energy but this sickness takes so much out of an animal the recovery process is lengthy. Kittens less than 16 weeks of age face a 75% mortality rate. I believe she is an exception and has the will to live. I am trying everything I possibly can for this little girl to give her a chance at life, but I need help from compassionate people like yourselves.

We are in desperate need of donations to help this little girl's fight to live. Her vet bills to date are exceeding $1,500 and could double by the time she is ready to be sent home.

PLEASE - visit our Web site at http://www.savethekitties.org and make a contribution to help Madison continue her journey. If you have any questions, my email address is on the site under the Wisconsin Link. I will answer any questions that you have, and I have provided phone numbers to the Emergency Hospital below if you would like to verify, whatever you need to show that this is a legitimate plea for help. Whatever you can give to help would be greatly appreciated!!

Again, contact me with any questions.

Thank you
Debbie Lovick

Garfield survived distemper as a kitten, but sadly we lost his identical twin brother Odie. Their mom needed a blood transfusion to survive. I understand that the care is expensive, but it seems that your vet should be making allowances for shelter kitties! How can they possibly charge that much, knowing that you work on donations?!? My agency has negotiated fees with several vets, and we have been very fortunate in saving a lot in this manner.

I'm sorry that I do not have any money to donate...but I do suggest you request a discount for this kitten. Let them know that you will give them credit, maybe even a news article if they wish, about their assistance.

Best of luck to Madison...it is a long battle. Garfield was so sick for so long. To this day, it is almost impossible to medicate him, since he was given so much nasty medication as a baby.

Be sure to keep Madison away from your cats. Distemper is extremely contagious, and can even be tracked on your shoes or clothing.

I've asked twice now for a price break and explained our situation. Got the same old line from both vets - we'll see what we can do. Oh, they did take off the office visit of $75.00 - WOW!!

Money and greed - the root of all evil!!!

Here are couple of pictures of Madison in the hospital:

Lots and lots of prayers and vibes for Madison! I'll send a donation but I can't afford more than $20. Have you thought of putting Google ads on your site? There are several animal rescue sites with Google ads that I visit every day to click on the ads. Prayers and vibes for you too Debbie. I know how trying this must be. Bless you for making such an effort to save kitties!

THANK YOU for your help and your support!! Madison is certainly the poster kitty of the year for Save the Kitties, Inc. but she has a long way to go for a full recovery.

As churchbug said, click on our google ads to help us raise more money to save more kitties. Every little bit helps when your a small organization. Keep checking the site for updates, and please anybody who wants to join our forum feel free.

Thank you
Debbie

you are all doing such an amazing job and its unfortunate that the vet wont help out with the cost.

The vet did help a little bit, knocked off about 1/4 of the price. I guess I can't ask for much more than that. At least little Madison is still alive.

She is home now and doing great!! She's still in quarantine for 6 weeks and doesn't like it much. Such a difference a week has made as she is eating, drinking and playing a lot in her cage. She still demands a lot of attention and care so it will be a struggle to try and juggle my schedule with hers, but we'll manage.

Thanks for asking and keep your fingers crossed that she continues to do good.

If you read about a plight of an animal on the internet and your heart is drawn to help. Check out the story thoroughly. Google the vet's name or call Directory Assistance in the city and be sure this is a legitimate claim.

Do not blindly send money into a paypal account no matter how heart-wrenching the story. Instead reach out to the member and ask for the vet's name and phone number, and arrange to send the money there for the specific needs of the cat in question.

If you read my story, I've provided the Vet Hospitals Name, Address and Phone number. One of the Vets attending to my kitten was Dr. Peter Accola - anybody who wants to call the vet hospital, or search under his name is more than welcome to do so. I know that scams go around, but this is not one of them. I also provided a paypal account from the Save the Kitties rescue to donate the money. If it were a scam, wouldn't I use my OWN paypal account!!!!
