Hello. I'm new to this board. A month ago, my boyfriend and I rescued 2 cats (a male and female) from a group called Any Feline Rescue at the local Petco. The male is 10 months old and the female is almost 2 years old.

They were eating a mixture of foods before we rescued them. We gradually switched them to Science Diet Indoor Cat formula food and they love it. They share 1 LitterMaid automated litter box. They both have no problem using it...I even asked the owners if it was ok for them to both share just one litter box and they said it would be fine. I know they use it because I am constantly emptying the tray. However, in the last week we noticed a fish/shrimp type of smell coming from our room...the litter box is in our closet (we have a small home and this is the only place we could put it that is semi-private). This smell is awful...we have to sleep in this room. The litter box itself isn't smelling. We even use the Arm and Hammer deodorizer. We did a black light test in the whole room, but we spotted nothing (the room is all linoleum floor). We can't figure out where the smell is coming from. I mopped the room twice in the past 3 days with warm water and Lysol cleaner. Yesterday the smell emitted from one side of the room. Today it is coming from a different side, but we found no pee. What does cat pee smell like anyway? Our cats are also spayed/neutered. Any advice/suggestions? I don't know what this smell is! Please help!

Please check any electric plugs, this happened to us a few years ago. there was a fault with a plug it didn't fuse, it started to burn and if we hadn't found it would have caused a fire. The thing that alerted us was the horrible fishy smell.

Oh wow! That's scary. Please check back, Hanna, and let us know if you are okay.

I have no idea what it could be otherwise; cat pee definitely does not smell like fish.

It really is the strangest thing because the smell isn't there all the time. Like, it will smell awful in the room for 5 hours or so and then be gone. I am truly baffled. I guess we can rule out that it is not urine. We will check the plugs.

Just to be absolutely sure it doesn't have something to do with your new babies, can you move the litter box and them for a few days to another location and see if it goes away?
Just a thought to help pinpoint the problem.
