This is my first litter and have been mentored by a fellow breeder. Our cat just had 8 Kittens (yes 8!) on January 26. So we are 12 days old. We have been having a slight problem with one of them. He was only 2 1/8 oz at birth. Now he only weighs 3 7/8 oz. (there were 2 others that were 2 1/8 oz at birth) but they are now over 5 oz. He nurses well and I do supplement him 2 or three times a day with a dropper approx 1 cc at each feeding. This morning I woke up and he sounds horrible. (he is breathing like he has an URI, but it sounds like it is down in his lungs) I have given him .1 cc of amoxi drops to try to clear it up. My question is is should I separate him from the other 7 or leave him with mommy and the others. I do not want to get the others sick. Or any other ideas. If I bring him into the vet, he may pick up something from there, I heard that is the worse thing to do. Or should I call the vet to get some other type of antibiotic? Any advise would be great. The kittens and the mom have been separated from our other 3 cats since birth so there shouldn' be any problems with that.

Advise would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I dislike going to the vet with a baby that young, but in this case, I think it is the best thing you can do. IMO, Amoxi is not the antibiotic of choice for such things and I would ask your vet about an alternative such as Baytril.

In your opinion should we separate him from the other kittens immediately?

Yes, all my foster kittens were on the Amoxi when they were sick.. didn't work very well, or at all. Baytril is awesome though.

Good luck.. I hope the little guy pulls through okay!
