He doesn't seem to have difficulty breathing any other time, but every once in a while he will start making this very odd wheezy "coughing" almost like he wants to throw up a hair ball but can't. I'd say it's every two or three days that it happens.

Other than that, he's a normal, if slightly hyperactive and very big (8.7 lbs!), 7 month old kitten.

Anyone else's cat do this?

*Edited to add: I should say he doesn't seem to have trouble breathing when he's coughing either, it's just very loud and hacky... like a person trying to clear their throat.

I would first run him by the vets to make sure there are no health problems. Other than that, sounds like a hairball to me--- but rule out any health probs. first

Hi-
I think this is my issue too! i posted under something like Cat "Wheezing". It's this strange noise- more raspy than a hairball sound. And when I listen close, it sounds like his nose is stuffed up, kind of. You know, like when you have a cold and your nose makes noise when you breathe. is it like that?

We took our guy to the vet and he couldnt' find anything. Well, he did find a heart murmur but he insisted it's unrelated. ( this is our vet specialist for diabetes and we think he's the best ever so we believe him in this case.)

Let me know what you find out. I'll check back here. Good luck!

That sounds pretty weird...let the vet check him, my male had the same kind of cough recently and it turned out he had a heart problem which led to him having fluid in his lungs (thus the coughing)!Especially if he is a bigger boy...might be some weight-related problem as well....I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's nothing serious!

It also might be due to dry air in your home. My kitty does this from time to time, so when I hear her, I start running the vaporizer and take her into the bathroom with me in the mornings when I shower so she gets "steamed". It seems to help and her cough goes away.

Thank you Stephanie for writing about the air issue!

It reminded me of how me and my bf are trying to get our air humidity up with vaporizers etc. since ours is so low, somewhere around 20-25%, and I hope that will be helping the coughing as well!

Yep... I did read your thread... but Toulouse isn't wheezing or stuffed up. He's even breathing normally when he's coughing, it's just very loud and... well the best way to discribe it is when you've got something in your lungs and you start hacking to clear it. It's very squeeky, actually.

He's a perfectly healthy kitten (only 7 months and not overweight although getting to be a big boy!) in every other respect. I think that he probably does have hairballs (I was thinking that before I posted but I wanted to check).

Hope you get your furkid straightened out!
