So in a very odd turn of events my Dad called the other day and told me he wants to get me a new Powerbook computer for my college graduation.

Before I continue, let me explain that while I am incredibly grateful for his offer, he doesn't know alot about computers (although he pretends to) and is saying something vague about being able to get a "great deal" on a powerbook right now. This is a bit scary as he is a proven, er, inflater.

At anyrate.... I've always been a PC (laptop) girl and I have two programs, Adobe CS2 and Dreamweaver, that I'm pretty sure I can't install on a Mac.

The reason Dad wants to get me a Mac is because I'm going into design and (from what I've heard) they are much better for that type of work. He says the "newest" powerbook will convert files... I think he must be talking about Mac OS X Tiger... but I don't think that operating system is cross-platform. I am worried about these two programs I've already bought.

So... what do you think of using a mac for design and what is your take on the newest (I assume the G4?) powerbook, Mac OS X Tiger and what it takes to switch from PC to mac? Then, which PC computers are best for designing?

Thank you!!!

I've heard Mac's are the best when it comes to graphic design. I use a PC myself, and I'm happy with what I can do. However, if you have Photoshop and Dreamweaver for your PC, you can't install those on a Mac. You'd have to go out and buy those programs again for a Mac computer.

I have a MAC and they are great for graphics! I have Dreamweaver installed on mine but the version you have will not work for a MAC. You will have to buy the MAC version. It doesn't take long to get used to Tiger either. It is very user friendly. Once you get used to it, you may never want another PC again! I don't do cross platform things on mine. Ive had Macs and Pcs. I love Macs and they used to be better for graphics. But now PCs are on par with them so its just a matter of personal opinion

Thanks so much for the advice everyone! I talked with my Dad today and told him I'd have to buy the programs again (which is tough on a student budget) and although I appreciated the thought, I'd have to decline.

He said he was going to send me the $ though when I graduate so we'll have to see what comes of that.....
