Guys, this storm is off our coast. IT HAS AN EYE!!!!!They've now closed the pacific shipping lanes to all traffic. Winds are 122 mph and the storm is SSW of Portland and heading up the coast, it will be here in the morning. Here is the latest satellite as of 3 pm.

That looks bad. I hope you're all safe up there. Do you get these kind of storms frequently in the winter or is this an unusual weather event for you?

How do they describe this - as a hurricane? or Typhoon being in the Pacific? Please excuse my storm ignorance on this one.

They call those storms Mid Latitude Cyclones. They are comparing this one to the inagural day storm and I'm not happy about it. The storms earlier this week knocked my power out and they were much weaker.

Stay Safe Eddie as I know you are in a heavily wooded area as well.

The weather forecast I just heard was pretty bland, but it did have wind warnings for the south coast overnight. It looks pretty socked in from where I sit, and the wind is picking up some. Glad I don't have go anywhere tonight or tomorrow.

Stay safe all my coastal and slightly inland friends.

Thanks, Leah! You too. Is Graham part of the foothills wind tunnel way down there??? This really is ominous.

Yes. It's not uncommon for our coastal areas/foothills to get severe windstorms about 3 or 4x per winter season, but nothing like this. Leah pointed out the terminololgy "mid-latitude cyclone" and it's usually an 8-10 hr windstorm that comes in after the rains and is exceedingly dangerous, as our ground is already saturated from 8 weeks of water and trees topple very easily. They have an uncanny knack for hitting in the early dawn when it's dark and you hear things crashing and glass breaking and you have NO idea what will fall on you. They said this one is one of the biggest they've ever seen.

There is a La Nina weather cell off the hawaiian coast this winter which is causing all this havoc with our wind and water temperatures up here (warmer than usual, more intense storms). But this one looks really, really bad. They rarely have an EYEWALL!

Last time, we had that straight line storm hit us. Hope this veers off course and goes somewhere else!

Oh Bother!!! Good thing we have a handcrank emergency radio, I'm NOT missing hearing the game on Sunday!

I'm stocked up on cat food, but need to zip out tomorrow am to be better prepared with food I can cook atop the woodstove, if needed.

Thanks for the heads up!

Graham, like Orting is down in a valley, we live up the hill from both. Keeping fingers crossed for no damage, no loss of power for any of us.

Correction: time for me to get off the 'puter. I meant Sumner and Orting are down in a Valley. Graham is straight up the road from us.

According to my husband... the zoo
We are in Oregon and I think we are ready (I hope)
my husband spent a while after work making sure everything is tied or nailed down, and nothing loose is laying around. I think we will be ok. Our house is new, so we don't have many mature trees for wind breaks, and the wind just roars and howls through here at 30 mph, so I'm not sure what this will be like. On the other hand, I'm glad I don't have to worry about any big trees falling on the house.

I'll probably turn off my computer early, but I'll check back in tomorrow.

OMG! Your kitties are so adorable! Look at Boogs. Juts like my Sasha below, look at that! (Sasha is almost 14).

It's eerily calm up here in the hills right now. It's like the storm is sucking everything into it like a hurricane. We have no wind, not a branch is moving.
I hope it goes north into B.C, then we will be fine, because I really wanted to relax this weekenf without any natural disasters and the superbowl with our Seahawks is on. Go figure, it takes Seattle 30 years to get to the Superbolw and then nobody here can watch it!
