I just found out about this dog breed, Klee Kai's, and was wondering if anyone on TCS had experience with them.

They are very pretty dogs! The s/o wants a husky or wolf-type dog eventually... so I've been looking around at different breeds. I think I'd rather go to the shelter though!

If you do decide you want to adopt rather than get a pup, check and see if they have a Klee Kai rescue group. I once adopted a great doberman from a rescue group (although, admittedly, dobermans are more common) -- but there are ususally rescue groups for most breeds and they will also tell you a lot about the breed.

what size dog are you looking for? Does it need to be small like a klee kai? There are a lot of other wolfish looking dogs out there, and like you said, you may be able to find one in a shelter.

*laugh* I'm not looking for one right now... I don't have the space, the yard, nor the permission to have one!

When I do start looking for one, I'll be looking for a medium to large (not extra large ie: Great Dane) dog. I would prefer to get one from a shelter or a rescue group. I feel like I'm doing being more helpful somehow by adopting an older dog that might not get a home.

The rescue group is a great idea, thank you 3cat. I should have thought of that right off. Since they're such a new breed, I wonder if there is one.

What attracted me to the Klee Kais was there are different sizes within the breed. I'm generally not too much of a toy or small dog enthusiast. I like them, but would rather have a larger doggie.

My dog Leah is an akita mix, but from what I've read, she is all akita personality. A close friend of mine had an akita as well. I would definitely recommend an akita -- great dogs.
Another friend of mine has a husky, very sweet dog, but very hard to train.
I'm not so sure I would recommend a malumute with cats, unless it was raised with them.

lol I laughed as I read this. You see, I would never even consider owning an Akita as I think they can be hard to train. I consider a Husky or a Malamute just a pain in the rear!
I guess it depends on the people! I personally love Labs & I can guarantee you can find one in a shelter.

It all depends on the individual dog too really. It is a great idea to read up on different breeds and find a couple that might work for your home. If you narrow it down too much you will never find what you are looking for from a shelter. Be open, pick a few traits you like and go from there. Spend time with some of the dogs individually in the shelters to see which on picks you.

And if you don't know what you are doing, any dog can be hard to train. Decide for yourself what breed you would and wouldn't consider. I was attacked by a shepard mix dog at a shelter I worked at but I certainly wouldn't tell anyone not to get a shepard mix because they are mean and hard to get along with. Also, I have known a few really great, well-trained Akitas. You can see from the major dog shows that all breeds can be trained with time, patience, and knowledge of how to do it successfully. Some pound dogs go on to be rescue dogs, I saw a special about it one time on Animal Planet.

Klee Kais are beautiful dogs by the way. I first saw a picture at rarebreed.com, a few years ago and I just thought they were great little dogs. They are recognized by the United Kennel Club it looks like and were first bred in the 80s. If you go to that site look under Alaskan Klee Kai.

Thanks for all the responses. Yep, there are tons of labX's here at the shelters.

I think with most dogs you have to go on their individual personality rather than breed. There are certain traits that do come out, but for example, Rottweilers, which have such a bad reputation, I've never had a bad experience with. Alot of the ones I see at the shelter are crosses, and often they are some of the sweetest dogs there.

It depends on who trained them and how their owner trained them too. IMO the meanest "breed" can be the sweetest "dog" if raised with the right family!

My other dog is a Lab -- he's a GREAT dog and wonderful with the cats!! (when he's not getting into things)
I didn't recommend one because kaleetha wanted soemthing wolfish or huskiy-ish (note -- I did say the husky's are sweet -- but hard to train!!)
You could definitely get a lab or mix at a shelter!!
I always get my dogs from shelters and/or rescue groups.
