hi guys,

well I have a problem with my new cat. I have had this cat for about 3-4 days but she keeps hiding under my bed and does not eat or drink water. sometimes she walks around the house when I am sleeping and only seems to use the litter box when all the lights are off. I was thinking of taking her out of my bed and put her in my living room to let her get to know me and the house. what you think?is this something strange?

She needs time to adjust to her new home. Do not force yourself on her. She really does need to eat and drink - 3-4 days is a long time to go without food and water and she could already be starting liver failure.

Please put out food and water (away from the litter) someplace she will feel safe and monitor what she is eating and drinking. I suspect she must be eating and drinking a bit after you go to bed and turn out the lights if she is using the litter as you say.

If she is truly not eating or drinking anything, she is in danger of liver failure and will need to see a vet immediately.

I would keep her in one room for the time being and just visit (do not look at her directly as cat's consider this a challenge) but sit on the floor and read to her or talk softly to her. She needs to learn that you are a friend and will not harm her. If you force her out or try to hold her against her will, you will make things worse.

We got a 6 month old kitten a number of years ago and he hid behind our headboard for 6 weeks. In that 6 weeks we would sit on the bed and talk to him, watch TV or I would just sit there and read and talk to him. We put food and water on one side of the room and his litter on the other.

It will take patience on your part but it will be worth it.
