You must get them a variety of scratching surfaces, vertical and horizontal. Try both sisal rope and carpet to see what your cats like. Many cats like the Turbo Scratcher, which has a cardboard middle for scratching. Once you have good scratching surfaces available, training the cats to use them is easy.

Also, trim their claws until they learn.

We have both the sisal-rope post and the turbo scratcher. She likes both.
We have crappy furniture (like the 30-dollar couch and hand-me-down chair type) but have been training her on that so when we get new furniture later she will already know.
You can rub catnip on the posts and put double-sided tape on your furniture. Or tin foil, as some have said, but my kitty would just rip it down and play with it!
Make sure the post is tall enough!!! Our first one wasn't. The kitty should be able to be totally stretched straight up and still scratch. And notice where she likes to scratch. Ours likes to have her posts at the entrance to rooms. And most importantly put it where you will see her scratching it all the time, since she/he wants to show you all how strong she is.
If you trim her nails, buy the actual cat nail trimmers. And read the threads on how to do it! Vets also will do this, and not very expensively.
Accidents do happen though. Today I was awakened by Zissou using my textbook as a scratching post!
