If they can abandon their posts at the first sign of danger than what good are they in protecting us!

Why are they unarmed? Our police are armed.

That is just terrible! Those Canadian border guards should be fired, but according to the article, they have the legal right to refuse to work if they believe their life is in imminent danger. Of course, how can 4 different crossings be in imminent danger at the same time?!? What a bunch of wimps! And now the whole world knows Canadian border guards are unarmed and spineless. Nice!

I'm glad the American police apprehended these murderers. Glad someone was willing to do their job that day!

Its insane.
Canada's gun regulations are so strict that their boarders cannot even be protected.
In defense of the agents, They are not allowd to have guns, what where they going to do? The individuals knew that Canadian agents do not carry guns, So what were the agents to do? Throw Hockey pucks at them? These people are People..not police trained agents like in the US.

Frequently here in WNY, the US customs will respond to a Canadian situation involving guns/drugs at the boarder for the same reason. The Canadian agents, have no protection and are usually not trained to handle any hostile situation.
it is not the fault of the individuals, its the regulations that do not allow them to have the necessary skills or equipment to defend Canada's boarders.

The Canadian govt position is that, "the US will never let anything happen to Canada so we do not need to arm our boarders."
And they are right, the US will never allow any hostile events to our Canadian Neighbors for many reasons(mostly self serving true, but there are those that do care about our allies)
But that does not protect Canada from individuals like those morons and their guns and drugs.
what a legacy Regan left for us.

Is no one in Canada armed? If I were at that border, and had murderers on the way, I would have called in the local police to help. In the US, there are many layers of law enforcement. The idea of giving up is not a good one. Surely there is someone in Canada who can help apprehend a murder suspect?!?

My opinions on law and order are well-known (I'm for it) as well as my stance on sensible gun ownership (once again FOR).

Now, before I weigh in on the concept of law officers being ALLOWED to desert their posts, in the face of danger, I'd like to hear from our Canadian members. Can any of you explain this policy and render YOUR opinions of it?

Customs and immigration officers at border crossings are not a trained police force. Maybe they should be, but they do not receive training in fighting crime. The do receive training in how to enforce border crossing regulations.

I believe that they want upgraded safety training. I believe that some of them, at least, would like the right to carry arms.

I see this whole story as the Canadian officers at the border trying to make a point, that they do need to be trained to carry arms.

Why are the unarmed!! I would run to if 2 murder suspects were coming my way and I had NO way to defend myself.... Canada should really rethink that policy

I agree. I believe we should have armed police at the border, just as they do in the US.

I also think it's ridiculous that Canada is a haven for foreign criminals. Actually, I'm ashamed of it. Our government really needs to crack down on crime in a big way.

Serious times call for serious measures, and gun violence (especially here in Toronto) is rapidly increasing. Maybe this is something Harper will actually follow through on... Let's hope.
