We had such a purrrfect day yesterday. The temperature was in the mid to upper 60's with lots of bright sunshine
Carmelo was excited as could be to see us. He even started to fall asleep, while sucking my thumb, after he ate. (He used to suck my thumb all the time when he was a little cub
) I was going to lay in the sun with him and take a nap, but the ground was still a little to cool and damp for that. There was an unfortunate event however
The male Eurasion Lynx, Montana, was found in the morning, with all the bones to his toes broken, on his right foot
His foot was swollen to twice it's normal size. By the way I saw the toes just hanging there, I knew this wasn't good. He was rushed to the vet for emergency surgery, that lasted close to 4 hours. How on earth this happened, is a total mystery. One thing we were thinking, is that he fell asleep on top of his den box, and rolled off in his sleep. The top of this den box, is 7-8 feet off the ground. Now, these Lynxes can jump very high. A 7 foot jump is easy for them, but since he may have fallen in his sleep, he would not have been able to prepare himself. However, we still don't know if this is what really happened. No person could have snuck in there and done anything to him, because it is securely locked. His surgery did go very well. They had to put pins in each of his toes. I just spoke with my friends down there about an hour ago and they said he is doing good, besides being a bit grumpy, which is to be expected. Now, we have to figure out what had happened. He has been in this enclosure for a couple years without any incident. We are all confused as to how something like this could have happened

I forgot to mention, that I did take more pictures. I will post them as soon as I can

I'm go glad you had such a wonderful day with Carmelo.

Poor Montana, but thank goodness he seems to be recovering well.

I can't wait to see the pictures of your day.

Since it is a cloudy rainy day, it is a good time to post some more pictures. There are a lot of Carmelo pictures this time. Hope everyone enjoys them

Boris says hello.

Boris and his girl Amber.

I know it was mentioned if we could post any pictures of us interacting with them. Well, here are a few of my wife and I, sharing some very pecial moments with our big boy Carmelo.
Carmelo and I share a hug.

My wife Terri shares some hugs with the boy.

More hugs with the boy.

This brush sure feels good

After Carmelo was brushed, he said it was time for him to groom me

Time for a nap

This sun sure feels nice

This is just so...cute

This will give you an idea how big Carmelo's enclosure is. I can't get the whole thing in one shot from inside. But this is part of it. That is my wife with Carmelo.

Here is pretty Beja.

Beja always looks cranky in photos

Poor Montana, I hope he recovers soon, and you can figure out what happened to him! Hopefully it WAS just a freak accident, I imagine if he fell awkwardly on his paw, the weight of his body would be enough to crush his toes.

Carmelo is as stunning as usual. He is such a handsome boy - I love the pics of you guys interacting with him - it really shows how sweet and affectionate he is
He loves his people
I LOVE the close up of him sleeping

There is still more

Meet the new arrival at the sanctuary. His name is "Beast" a 2 year old African Serval. Now, the person who owned him, decided they had to give him up, because they were going to have a baby. Same dumb excuse I hear, when people give up domestics as well
People need to think before getting any animal. Well, this guy is going to have a great time here. He will no longer have this terrible name "Beast" either, that will be changed for sure. Once he settles in, I will get some better pictures.

Awww, nothing like a pic of a boy with his daddy.

Loved the pic of Carmelo grooming you. Did he leave you any hair?

Beja is a sweetie, but you are right, she always has a crabby look. I don't think she likes the camera very well and she is very jealous of Carmelo. If I am in with Carmelo giving him lots of hugs, she walks over and starts yelling really loud. Montana is doing good. He will need some time alone, but he should be back to his ol self soon. It is still confusing to us, as to what happened. There was no cut on his foot either. Yes, Carmelo is a big sweet boy and loves all the affection he can get.

ARGH!!! I hate hearing that excuse, too! Makes me want to ask them if they'd give up the first baby just because they are expecting another!

Handsome Nakoma

Looks like me in the morning.

Hey,

I've just read through your entire thread and wow, it's been facinating following along with what it's like sharing your life with those gorgeous big cats.

I hope you'll be able to find a place soon where you'll have the space to get Carmelo back but until then he's obviously loving your visits and he's in good hands where he's now.

I have a Bengal cat myself so I'm well aware of how intense they can be, I also know someone who has an F1 bengal and she sais that her boy is much more intense than "normal" bengals so I can just imagine the bond you must have with your cats.

Anyway thanks for sharing your story and photos with us in this thread and I'm looking forward to all updates

Great pictures as usual, John.
All the cats are beautiful, but I must say that Amber is my favorite...I just want to cuddle her she's adorable!
