Oh boy, I was just contacted by the New York state DNR. It appears that a woman has a 2 year old male Bobcat and a Serval. New York state now has a ban on exotic ownership, thanks to the wonderful AR groups of course
This ban is about 2 years old now. Well, she can not get a permit for these cats, due to the stupid ban and the state will not let her keep them
Once again, thank you very much AR!! She did try to hide the cats, by saying that the Bobcat was a Pixie Bob and that the Serval was a Savanna. Well, the state wants to know if I can take them or know anyone who will. So, now I have the task of trying to find homes for these cats. This is another reason why these bans are so very wrong. This poor woman is now going to lose her cats and the cats are going to lose their only home that they knew and loved. A Bobcat is easier to place in a new home, but Servals can be a little more difficult, if they had been very attached to their owner. I have to ask myself, do I have room or does my friend have room at her sanctuary? I will also contact people within the exotic community. I hope that I can find a good home for these cats. I will take them no matter what, if they are at risk of being put down.

That's so sad.
I can't imagine the pain that poor Woman and her cats are going through.
I have faith in you, I know you'll find good homes for those babies...it's just sad that you have to.

Oh I'm really sorry to hear that
I hope you can find a good home for these kitties. It'd be great if everyone was responsible and there was no need for these silly bans that are caused by a few idiots!

Good luck!

I have to call the guy from New York to get more information. From what I understand, the Bobcat is 2 years old and the Serval is 8 years old. If this Serval has been with this lady for 8 years, it's going to be hard on that cat. What I don't understand, is why she is not allowed to keep the Serval and maybe even the Bobcat. I have to look when the ban law went into effect. I believe it has been 2 years and if so, if she had the Serval for 8 years, she would be grandfathered in and since the Bobcat is 2, he may also be grandfathered. However, I am not sure if she has proof of when she got the cats and I am not sure if she got a permit when she first acquired them, so this is something I need to find out. At the moment, many of my exotic friends are down in Texas for the big FCF exotic feline convention, that I had to miss this year
If I can reach our friend who has the sanctuary, she will be able to spread the word that these cats need a home.

Here... or There... Hmmm
That is just sad.
I really hope that there is some way for her to keep her babys! It's just not fair for them to have to be re-homed. If they do have to go I hope that they both find a wonderful place and that she can somehow get them back!

Here are a couple pictures of these babies in need of a new home.
This is the Serval, she is 8 years old. By the looks of her in this picture, she needs some better care. Of course, this could be an old or bad picture too. I hope I can find a new home for her asap.

This is the 2 year old male bobcat. He looks really good

Maybe she should just move to a state where she's allowed to keep them. If she wants them bad enough. I wouldn't be able to part with them, wondering about them for the rest of my life. It would kill me. I don't have kids, so my animals ARE my kids. I know it's not as easy as it sounds, but where there's a will, there's a way.

I have no kids either, so I feel the same way about my cats. It's become really difficult to move these days, with exotics. Sad, but due to the AR pushing for more bans from state to state, this has become an ugly reality. However, it can be done. Actually, the state of New York should just grandfather her in and issue her a permit. Their exotic ban law is not that old really. Better yet, New York could always lift their ban law and have good, solid fair regulations, that would require people who desire to own exotics to get a permit, require them to have proper housing/caging and random inspections.

Is there maybe some way she could go around with a petition to try to keep them? I'm just trying to think...
What are the states that DO allow owning exotic cats, by the way? I know my sister in AZ has a friend who owns a couple of bobcats that walk around the house...

Well, even if she did get a petition, since New York does have a ban law now in the books, it really wouldn't work. However, a petition that would be great to see, is one requesting the New York state legislature, to remove the ban law and replace it with fair regulations. That would really be fantastic, if something like that would happen. As for the states that do allow ownership, everyone is different, but I don't have the list in front of me at the moment. It ranges from a total ban, to some with regulations and others with no regulations. In your home state of Florida, you are allowed to own them, but you have to meet the guidlines of the regulations. Florida has a pretty good regulatory system for owning exotics. Depending on the cat, you need to meet a minimum property size and require proper caging. For a cat such as a cougar, you need a minimum of 2 acres of land, if I recall it correctly. I know a lady in Florida who has a cougar and she has 2 1/2 acres. For a bobcat, I am not sure what the regulation is, it may be a minimum of 1 acre, but I am not possitive. I applaud the state of Florida for not banning (not yet anyway).
As fo this Serval and Bobcat, I do have some good news. Our friend, who has the cat sanctuary, knows of a person in New York who just received or has the proper permits to own exotics. (I think he wants to open a sanctuary, that is why he has the permit. I believe the State of New York will issue a permit for reasons such as this, but no longer for private or "pet" ownership. These laws change so much sometimes, that it is hard to keep track. However, I will look it up tomorrow. I am going to our friends sanctuary today, will be leaving in about 30 minutes, so I will get all the information.
Congratulations to your sisters friend, who is blessed to live with bobcats

Yeah, the B-actor (a one-time Tarzan) in our county has a few tigers and other exotics, but he's having a very hard time with his permits this time around. Did you know the story of how his tiger, Bobo, escaped a couple years ago and one of the cops shot and killed him because he thought he was going to get attacked? It was horrible. Just horrible that this beautiful, magnificent animal was killed like that.
Do you think your friend would take in that serval and bobcat?
