How can you tell how old a cat is?

You can lok at their teeth (not count, just look) and it's kinda hard for me to explain but depending on how much wear or tartar there is, you can make a pretty good guess. It's hard if you've never done it before, best bet would be to have the vet look.
My vet looks at the teeth but he only tells me the approximate age. He admitted though he might be off by one or 2 years.

the younger the cat the easier to get within a few months... my Zoey was told at the shelter to be 2-3 yr s ... two vets within a month of me getting her stated 8-10 months ... her current vet said she was born no earlier than 2004... which meant she was not older than 9 months when I got her...
When I got Willow, the shelter told me she was at least a year old, but the vet said she was only 9 months (she's about 7 years old now). I never understood why the shelter would overestimate her age...you'd think they'd rather guess that she was younger.
My vet also mentioned with my old boy that there is some sort of marbling in the eyes in older cats. She can't give me an exact age on Spot, but the marbling plus the worn teeth mean that he was older than 10 when I found him (though he's probably more like 14 or 15).
If the cat is a kitten, the big canine teeth start to come in around 6 months old. A vet can also tell by the teeth structure when they are really young about how many weeks. When I got the kittens the vet said they were about 12/13 weeks by looking at their teeth. Sure enough right at 6 months old (by her guess) the canines started coming in.
