could you please give me advise on what causes my cat's fur to mat on his stomach, I have tried combing it out but he cries as I am hurting him, He is also loosing hair, he is a long haired cat and only 2 yrs old. This is the only problem he has, other wise healthy

i would take him to the groomers - he may need to be shaved if they're really bad.

The key with mats is to comb the cat daily before the mats form- prevention is always easier than cure.

You can try to tease them apart very gently with a metal comb- if the cat is tolerant it will be relatively easy. If the cat is not tolerant you may indeed need a groomer- either to comb them out or if they are very bad- shave the tummy entirely.

While you are at the groomers have them schedule a few moments to show you how to maintain your cats coat so this doesn't happen again. I do brushing/combing demos for clients every day and it helps about 50% of them. The other 50% would rather pay me to do it.
