So today a very nice couple came in with a beautiful stray cat that they found. He is all white except for his ear tips and the tip of his tail. They named him "Whitey." They said they'd seen him outside for a about a month before they took him in. He is THE most loving cat you ever want to meet. Neutered and declawed, so he obviouly belonged to someone at some point. I scanned for a microchip-nothing. Judging by his teeth, I guessed him to be about 2 years old or so. We did FIV/FELV test, fecal (both negative
), and vaccines. They plan on keeping him. Now, this is all well and good. Except for the sad part, which is, this cat was EXTREMELY matted all over his body. Mats all over his belly, neck and tail, and his ENTIRE back was one big huge mat, all connected down his back! I was appalled! Under the mats, the skin is really pink and sore looking, and he is filthy.
AND, he's outdoors and he is declawed in front.

Since they're keeping him, they wanted to do everything they could for him. They have one other cat, too. So, I told them we have to sedate and shave him down. He is really uncomfortable even being held, because the mats pull when you hold him. I will be cleaning up his teeth when he is under, and I'm going to give him a lion cut. I can't WAIT to do it, he will feel SOOOOO much better when he wakes up! I am really excited about doing it. It's such a quick fix and the poor little wonderful kitty deserves to be feeling good, he's such a lover! It was a sad story, but it turned out good for Whitey. He's never going to feel this kind of neglect again with his new owners...

Poor kitty. Shame on the people who turned him out like that. Thank God there is such a great couple who is willing to take him and in and care for him. I'm glad you get to give him a little makeover!

I LOVE lion clips!!!
Such a satisfying feeling when you get to send kitty home with a nice smooth coat and a fresh start. One of my cats came through the clinic like this. The HS had a badly matted stray that needed a dematt before he came to the shelter. We sedated him and started trimming and found two very "suspicious" matts under his tail
. SO we called the HS and got permission to neuter too.

Later, on one of my visits to the shelter I met him again, still a little shaggy but much happier. He was such a little monkey- trying to get us to pick him up, stealing my hair scrunchie right off of my wrist, climbing into our supply boxes, that i just had to adopt him.
He is the cutest cat- and his coat is just beautiful- no matts since we shaved him.

I cried when I read this. God bless you ... and them.

Well Whitey came in to be shaved today. I got the back mat off in one single piece about a foot long. Underneath was really angry looking skin with red sores from where the mats were so tight, they irritated it. He's bald and clean, he should be SOO happy, a new cat when he wakes up! I love shavedowns, it's such a good feeling when they wake up free of discomfort!
I took before and after pics, I'm going to ask the owners if I can post them on here for you to see the difference. They might change his name, I'm gonna suggest "Matt."

Glad to hear he's comfy being naked and clean!! I once did a lion's on a cat in similar shape to whitey, I actually weighed the cat again after I shaved him--he was two pounds lighter!!!

Lol, I was thinking of doing that too! The new owners came to pick him up today and said they had placed a lost and found ad for Whitey, and someone called them who'd been missing their cat since May...Can you imagine? In a way, I hope it's the owner, but in a way, I don't, because they said they always let him out and one day he didn't come home....these new owners love him already and have spent a lot of money so far on his "tune up." I kinda hope he was just unwanted and gets to live with them...I'll keep you posted...

If it is his owners, they should not get huim back after neglecting him like that - and declawing him in addition. How horrid can people be.
