Hi there, Im new to the forums and needing some advice... I have an amazing loving burmese which is part of the family and myself and girlfriend were looking after a friends tabby cat. And so our nightmare begins...

I woke up at 4:00am on Sunday the 8th with a huge crash, jumped immediately up and the tabby cat had accidentally knocked my "Milla" off the window sill - she fell only a story but hit another window on the way down and 3 steps. I rushed her off to the vet and she had only broken her leg. Monday we moved her to another vet for surgery and she went in for the operation on Tuesday 10th. Spoke to the surgeons and they said it was a complicated break and deffinately not common. The op went well / surgeons said better than expected, they sugested she be booked in to a 24hour vet facility for 6days to be monitored as she needed to be confind to a small enclosure as she could damage her leg further.

Now she's finally back at home! worst week ever! our 24hr vet suggested we keep the tube in her neck for awhile until she's eating properly, my question to you guys its been almost 2 weeks since the surgery and she's sleeping a hell of alot is this normal??? how long will it take for her to be kind of back on her feet. she went in today back to the vet to have the tube removed. the docters said she's doing well, no temp n looks healthy but i dunno / she's sleeping alot! When i mean sleeping alot - its like she awake for 5min a time when we go into the room and boom back to sleep for hours and today she's hardly touched her food... Is this all normal???? she's deffinately been through alot! she will be going back for another check-up on monday to have new leg bandages put on.
Anyone else been in similiar situations that can share some light, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Andrew

Did they run x-rays on everything, not just her legs? I would be inclined to take her back have a neurological check and complete set of x-rays. Poor kitty is also more than likely in PTSD and they do sleep a lot when they are stressed.

Yup complete check and full x-rays, twice hehe Just frustrating seeing her constantly tired / almost drugged but she's on no medication thay have taken her off the meds. I thinks its the whole trauma of the fall and been away from us for almost 2 weeks since the accident.
Thank you for the quick response

What type of medication did they have her on? When Otis broke his leg they put him on some medication called metacam. They prescribed it for 3 weeks (which is not healthy since cats livers can't handle it) and after about 2 weeks he started sleeping a ton. He started getting really lethargic and stopped eating and drinking over time. He also started vommiting and that's when I stopped the medication. It was a really really slow process, total it probably took about 2 weeks for me to be concerned enough to bring him into the vet. Once cats hit 'that point' they can deteriorate very quickly. When I did bring him in his temp was about 95, and I believe normal temp for a cat is 102? He was at his last moments and they said he probably wasn't going to make it. After 5 days of fluid therapy he was finally able to come home and hasn't had any problems since. While he was in critical care he had a few seizures and it took about 2 months for him to get back to himself. This is probably worst case senario but I'd feel guilty if I didn't reply lol. Hope this isn't the case with your kitty!

Update:
Monday came n she went in for her check up, All seemed well with the leg n further x-rays & the surgeon was pleased, he also removed her stitches and said that the bandage on the leg must stay off as she needs to use the leg so her muscles dont get weak. He was also concerned with her not eating... took her temp and it was high 40.6 and they suggested they treat her and get down to the bottom of the temp. They opted for a tube down her nose 2 feed her and by tuesday the temp had dropped - they took urine and blood tests n theese were the results:
wcc - low
platelets - low
globulins - high
lymphaytes - low
He said this could be caused by the actual surgery, mycoplasma, FIP...
and she's been treated with Doxycyclin, tube food and ketophen

I dunno, im actually at a loss for words, i dunno if im coming or going. When the doc mentions FIP and its fatal - im just like what???!! I just want da Milla's better. Im in a rock and a hard place, If she comes home she doesnt eat and has no stress and if she's a the vet she gets to eat but has lots of stress! I honestly dont know which one is gonna kill her more / not eating or stress.

Now she should be sent home tomorrow or on friday and the vet said if she doesnt start eating they gonna have to put another tube in her. Im worried!!!! I read the article on http://www.thecatsite.com/Cats/Cat_H...Lipidosis.html
and its given me some pointers to try n get her to eat. If it means i have 2 feed in a tin of AD in a syringe in her mouth the whole day i will!
If anyone can give me some pointers throw them my way please!

I hope your cat recovers. Sorry I can't offer any insight as to what is happening, but I am praying.

I am currently looking after our 1yr old cat who was hit by a car, broke his back leg and dislocated his hip. The first week was nerve racking and very stressful as he wouldn't eat so he couldn't be given his antibiotics. I got some advice from a pet store to buy cat food that was rich in salt (not their normal advice to pet owners) which would make him thirsty and get him to want to drink, I also bought top of the range single servings and I literally finger fed small amounts to him regularly throughout the day, in no time at all he was eating his normal food and drinking warm milk, wont touch water at the moment so I figure milk is better than nothing. So far so good but still a long road of recovery ahead and lots of care. Hope this might be of some help in getting your car to eat.
