I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it could be a possible sign of a thyroid problem.

Mr Mustache had very thin fur when he got here. It grew in normally after a few months of care.

LOL, I'm sorry, like I said -- no expert -- but I do know that people's hair thins out with thyroid problems, so I thought it could be a possible sign of a problem with a cat as well. But don't mind me, I didn't mean to worry you -- I am one of those paranoid, check with your vet about everything people. If the vet said it was nothing to worry about, than it probably isn't.

Well the vet doesnt think its thyroid because she said thyroid happens in older cats. This one is 2 1/2..

The vet said it might be allergies or just diet.

I've known of perfectly healthy cats that have had thin fur. And I agree with your vet that it likely could just be diet. Actually now that I think of it, Peaches came from the humane society and she had very thin fur when I first got her. Nothing thin about it now!

One thing I don't agree with your vet on... cats of any age can have thyroid problems. I've had one that developed thyroid problems at 3 years old. And belonged to another board where other younger cats had the same problem. Maybe it's not as common though.

Even if your vet doesn't think so, you can still have a blood test done.

If the vet thinks changing diet might help, maybe try that first. Also, you might want to try an allergenic diet like that natural balance venison and green pea so you can rule out allergies and diet at the same time. Then if you see no improvment ask for the thyroid test?
