I need to get an over the stove microwave, as my existing one went to microwave heaven, after just 3 years (a Whirlpool). I dont have Consumer Reports. Does anybody know the most reliable or best brand for a microwave over??? Thanks

What's the best or most reliable? Who knows. What I CAN tell you is that I had a Toshiba for 12 or 13 years, with never a minute's trouble, until the magnetron died. I replaced it with a Samsung, which I have had now for getting on for 10 years, with never a problem. I've encountered others in other situations, like in my office, and found them fine. I gather Panasonic is built like a tank, has all the bells and whistles and stands up well, but I don't really have enough personal experience to say more than that. I hope that's useful....

thank you everybody
...the magnetron in mine is what died. They are supposed to last more than a couple of years. Im leaning towards the Samsung because most of their products are fairly reliable.

Wow, I looked at Consumer Reports online (I subscribe), and those over-the-range models are kinda pricey. Anyway, the Samsung SMH7178 is a CR Best Buy, as is the Panasonic Genius NN-H264. The best one was the Whirlpool Gold GH4155XP, which is a little more expensive. They do say, though, that the Whirlpool models tend to have good repair histories, whereas they don't have enough info to judge the Panasonic and Samsung nukers.

We had a Siemens that lasted for well over 21 years, and the only reason we had to replace it was that I accidentally cracked the door. I like Samsung products in general, because their customer service is quite good, should a problem develop.

When microwave ovens came out in the 70's my mom bought one and Amana.
Our family has had Amana's ever since. In fact when we remodeled the kitchen 10 yrs ago I gave that Amana oven to a friend (it was 10 yrs old at the time)
and its still going strong. NEVER A PROBLEM!!!!

Mom swears by the panasonic genius's. I'll be looking for a panasonic when I move out, and highly recomend them. There's a Canadian consumer show called "The shopping bags" and they recomend the Sanyo...BUT their tests weren't on durability, rather things like defrost and popcorn modes.
