My cat is about 5 years old and going for surgery in the next couple of weeks. I'm just wondering if we need the intravenous fluids during the surgery or not. (Guidelines say that under 7 years old you don't need them, but that 1 in 10 show distress that could be prevented.) I'm confused as to what I should do.

I'm assuming a vet is doing this surgery and therefore should know what to do. I would definitely talk to the vet that will be doing this surgery and get those answers from him/her.

IMO IV fluids are a good idea. it may cost a little more but my animals always get them. Even young animals can have problems under anasthetic so emergency IV access could be a lifesaver. It also keeps your cat hydrated (remember she has been fasting and will not be eating/drinking post op) which will protect her kidneys.

Ty for your advice. Yes..a vet will be doing the surgery...did I give the impression I was going to be trying it myself?!

The vet did recommend it, but we weren't sure how necessary it really is compared to the extra cost. Thank you for your response.

Just me being silly - I read your last paragraph and it kind of sounded to me like you were going to be doing it. As you can probably tell, I have a silly sense of humour.

Let us know how kitty makes out.
