Hello, I know this is no big deal, but I am wondering why Tuffy has all of a sudden changed from his normal sleeping spots. I could almost always find him sleeping on his pillow by the window or in my old rocking chair. But as of the last couple days he spends alot of time sleeping in the pet carrier. There is a old wool sweater in there. Could this be some instinct learned from wild cats? Not to stay in the same spot for to long? I am not worried about him, just wondering why cats do some of the things they do.

I love this about cats. Mine change their "favourite" sleeping places every few months. They eventually rotate back to the same old spots, but it's interesting to find them in a new and unexpected place.

Right now, they are both sleeping on my bed. But I can tell, Sam is testing out his cat bed in the living room again, he hasn't slept there for a couple of months.

How old is Tuffy? When an old cat changes any habit out of the blue I'm always concerned. Shep started moving her sleeping spot after her first stroke and that was the first sign that something was wrong.

If he is young and healthy, he might just be looking for a little excitement.

Our cats also switch thier sleeping arrangements. Scince we got another cat, they kind of alternate who gets to sleep where. Sometimes I catch them sleeping together, and think that they must have just been like, "fine, we'll both sleep there"

But I would also say, if he's young, and healthy....Maybe he's just looking for something new.

Oh, and dont mean to Hijack your thread, but MAN!!! everyday, I see a new person from Wisconsin on this site. It's so wierd.

I would only worry if he's sleeping in really odd places. Otis would hide/sleep behind doors and in a tipped over trash cans when he got really sick and had seizures. If he's young and there's nothing else strange then there's a good chance he's still normal

Has the weahter recently changed? When it's warm outside, Callie likes to sleep in the closet, but when it's cold, she likes to snuggle (& spend the day) in her bed that's next to my side of the bed.

We don't really know how old he is for sure, vet tech thought maybe 3 or 4 from his teeth. I didn't think about the weather, it has got cold and windy at night again so maybe sleeping by the window or in the chair which is right by a outside wall is to cold for him.

Maybe he was bothered by the old pillow case on his pillow, I put a clean one on it for him and he slept there last night again. I noticed he moves to the window about the same time every morning, he likes to look outside when the sun comes up. We have bunny rabits [sp?] around here and I think he likes to watch them because they are out early in the mornings. I also have my bird feeders right outside the same window.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I have heard it said that changing sleeping spots is "hard wired" -- instinctive. Not sure what Mother Nature's rationale is, if that is so. But it does seem to fit, because we've always noticed that with our lot, the current ones and previous ones. All of a sudden the "favoured" place will be abandoned, and a new one adopted, and after a few of these changes the rotation returns to the original spot. Nothing else changes, and there's no reason to believe that any of them has developed any health issues -- they just rotate around. I've almost stopped noticing.

Sassy changed her sleeping spots several times in only like, two weeks.. first she was on my bed, then she moved to hard surfaces, like the computer desk, kitchen chairs, and the top of my bookshelf, then she started sleeping in the cabinets under the sink, then the toilet seat in my bathroom, and now the bed in mom's room (which she hardly ever leaves.. except to eat and use the litter box). I thought it was pretty strange..

Harley recently changed his sleeping spot as well. He used to sleep with me during the night on his pillow on our bed, but now he's been sleeping in the living room on the couch or on the living room floor even. Not really too sure why either, I was concerned at first, but the other night he came back up to sleep with us for 1/2 the night and then he went back to the living room.

I think Harley is just looking for something new - he can never stay in one spot for long!
I just miss that purring little fuzzball sleeping next to my head every night!

Ours does the same thing. When we adopted her a year ago, she actually slept in one of those cat beds that most people buy and the cat never goes near it. She normally sleeps on the covered, screened in patio during good weather (no cold or storms). She changed to sleeping right in front of the door into the Family Room. Then a few months later switched to sleeping on the hot tub cover. During her time in the house, she usually sleeps on an ottaman in the den, but lately has started sleeping in the new guest bedroom that we had built. It's almost like we built it for her now...

Yes I completely agree!  Our cats over the years have done the same thing without health issues. Our current cat has a total of 6 places and when we look for her we will find her in one of the 6. She usually will use the same one for a while but will switch out from time to time.  Sometimes I think she likes to mess with us because we will look in all 6 places as we're calling for her not finding her in any of the 6 then find her in a completely new place she never uses and doesn't use again it's like she is playing hide and seek
