My husband isn't even allowed to bring his bunker gear home with him because the chief says the smoke and chemicals from a fire stick to the gear and can affect one's family. It seems more than obvious that these rescuers were exposed to some horrible stuff and that it will have a direct effect on their health. There are several men who worked on a different shift from my grandfather who fought a fire about 30 years ago, they have all died from the same type of lung disease- directly related to the fire they fought all those years ago. It is amazing the stuff our firefighers, emts, and police officers are exposed to on a daily basis and how much risk they are in to serve and protect us.
