Just thought I'd introduce myself before posting!

My name is Nicole, and my bf and I just adopted an adorable male cat. We've named him Puppy due to his large size. The vet weighed him in at nearly 13 pounds, and he's not fat at all. Just very large, and only a year old! I suspected he's part Maine Coon, even though he's shorthaired. I'd be curious what other think of this. I'll post some pics when I get home. He has 8 toes on each of his front feet. His coloring is mostly white with carmel markings on his ears, down his back, and on his tail. His fur is mostly undercoat, so he's VERY soft. An absolute sweetie; we're very lucky to have him. His nicknames are Pupperino and Chill Cat (not much seems to phase him, including our industrial vaccum cleaner!)

As long as I'm posting, here's his very interesting story:
My parents found him, very thin, wandering through the yard. There's a lot of abandonded cats in our neighborhood, so they didn't take too much notice. They already have two elderly female cats (16 and 15) that I left with them when I went away to college. Puppy was a sweetheart though and won them over. They were sure he was someone's pet because he was declawed and neutered. When the took him door to door, no one knew whose cat he was. They called the SPCA, but no one had reported a declawed cat with extra toes missing. They knew we were thinking about getting a cat, so they called us. We made arrangements to fly him across the country with us (we live on opposite coasts).

He lived with my parents for over 6 weeks and put back on some missing weight. He adjusted to indoors very quickly and caused quite a stir with the elderly girls. We bought him lots of toys and he was quite happy. He still liked to wander outside, but he gradually spent more time indoors. We put a collar on him so the rest of the neighbors knew he was no longer a stray.

We took him to the vet to get a health inspection when they discovered a microchip! As it turned out, he was registered to a family living 3 doors down. They had adopted him from the SPCA 6 months previously. So we left him at the vet's office to be picked up by his owners.

The next morning, the vet calls us. The owners called them and claimed that the cat was miserable, would we still want it? At this point, we were concerned that these people were very weird and may not take care of him well at all. It was kind of odd that in all his wandering, he never wandered to their place. Or he did, and they didn't want him back. They were also the people who declawed him (which is funny, becuase he is very polite and uses the scratching post, unlike the other two cats in my parents' household!) So we picked him back up, less than 24 hours after leaving him at the vet. I still have to get the microship re-registered, but they have our number in case he gets lost. Does anyone know where I register the chip at?

Two plane rides and some long bus rides later, he's with us. He's used to being in a large house, having access to outdoors, and sharing with two cats who hated him. Now he's in an apartment and sharing with a turtle in a 120 gallon tank! He's hissed once at the turtle, but otherwise he avoids the tank. We've become concerned about how to help him adjust, so I decided to come here and get some questions answered.

Thanks!

Looking forward to pics when you get a chance.
