I want to make my sweetie a CD of love songs, and I have some in mind, but I have a feeling there are songs I haven't thought of that I MUST have on the CD. What are some of your favorites, sweet, sexy, or anywhere in between?

You had me from hello, Kenny Chesney
It's your love, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
Come away with me, Norah Jones
Bless the Broken road, Rascal Flatts
I wanna grow old with you, (hehe) Adam Sandler from the Wedding Singer
When I look into your eyes, Firehouse
I'll never let you go, Steelheart
I can't stop loving you, Van Halen
But I do love you, Leanne Rimes
Crazy, Patsy Cline
Unforgetable, Nat King Cole (?)
When you say nothing at all, Alison Kraus
Right where I need to be, Gary Allan
Feels so right, Alabama
To name a few...

What can I say? It's a subject I relfect on quite often. I put music to things that happen in my life and the songs become special to me.

I'm a fan of sad, or sad sounding love songs. I also haven't had a date this century. Coincidence?

Heather Nova - Like Lovers Do
Shiela Nicholls - Fallen For You
Natalie Merchant - My Skin
Garth Brooks - She's Every Woman
Vanessa Carlton - Ordinary Day
Ryan Adams - Desire
Kristen Hersh - Your Ghost
Ryan Adams - La Cienga Just Smiled
Dire Straights (or Indigo Girls) - Romeo and Juliet
(edit: whoops, just kidding)
Ryan Adams - Come Pick Me Up
Counting Crows - Anna Begins
Nina Simone - My Baby Just Cares For Me
Nina Simone (though I think Nora Jones does a better job) - Turn Me On

Some of those might not be what you're looking for. In the name of all that is good, do not put Jouis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World' or John Mayer's 'Daughters' on there. One is cliche, the other is horrible.

No worries there. Though I can't help loving "What a Wonderful World." Sometimes things are cliché for good reason.
In this case, however, that's not really the vibe I'm going for.

It is funny, but in its own way, that is one of the most real love songs I've ever heard.

Don't put these songs:

The One I Love REM

Confetti U2

Wicked Games Chris Isaac

Great song that people play at wedding but when you read the lyrics you find out they are not so romatic.

Eg. The One I love REM
(chorus 1)
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love

(chorus 2)
Fire (sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s cominâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji] down on her own, now)
Fire (sheâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s cominâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji] down on her own, now)

To my amazement, one of the very best love songs I know is by a CURRENT ARTIST -- not a greying boomer like myself! ;-) You cannot make a love song CD without "I'll Be," by Edwin McCain. I just love his heartfelt promise, "I'll be better when I'm older." Oh, how very true...

But most of the really great love songs go back farther than that one. Here are some that may be a little obscure...

"How Can I Tell You?" -- Cat Stevens

"Suzanne" -- written by Leonard Cohen, best performed by Neil Diamond

"You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" -- Bob Dylan

That last one is as sweet and simple and lovely a little song as I've ever heard, not at all what you expect from Dylan:

Purple clover, Queen Anne's lace
Crimson hair across your face
You can make me cry, if you don't know
Can't remember what I was thinking of
You might be spoiling me too much, love
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Also...

"Jersey Girl" -- written by Tom Waits, best performed by Bruce Springsteen

This is one of the prettiest songs I know:

I got no time for the corner boys
Down in the street, makin' all that noise
Or the girls out on the avenue
'Cause tonight I'm gonna be with you
Tonight I'm gonna take that ride
'Cross the river to the Jersey side
Take my baby to the carnival
And I'll take her on all the rides...
'Cause down the shore, everything's all right
You and your baby on a Saturday night
Nothin' matters in this whole wide world
When you're in love with a Jersey girl...

That one may be hard to find... it was a B-side many years ago... but oh, it's worth tracking down. As beautiful a love song as I've ever heard.

This is a wonderful idea, making a CD for your honey! I'm sure he'll love it!
