My subrciption for my current program is finally up, I have been very unhappy with it as it blocks my msn account and makes things very difficult with new programs. I tried to call them to reslove this by they treated me like a moron and I hung up on them.
So I wanted to ask is there a better product out there any of you would recommend? Something that doesn't block everything including the programs you use?

From the sounds of it, I don't think its the Anti-Virus program that's causing your issue. Sounds to me like you got an Internet Security deal and that you have a Firewall that is causing your MSN to be blocked. Reason behind this is that a number of SPAMmers and viruses orginate with emails from msn.com,hotmail.com, etc (as once again, it is a Microsoft-inspired program and therefore has more flaws than yahoo.com or gmail.com).

In anycase though, good home-use AntiVirus programs are:

AVG (it's FREE!) - although it does tell you when you're infected, but isn't very good at cleaning the virus off.

Computer Associates (CA) Antivirus - Pretty good program. It gets the job done.

McAfee Antivirus - Good program to use. I would recommend it.

Symantec Antivirus - Really good program. It costs more, but is well worth it and user friendly.

Also check with your Internet Service Provider. Most of them now come with Antivirus protection.

I can't praise Avast! Antivirus highly enough. It is free, updates very regularly, and has caught a lot of viruses for us. It is very easy to use and works very well.

My only caveat: Don't leave your computer speakers turned up loud, as the warning tone is the 'red alert" siren from the original Star Trek series. The first time it came on at about 3 AM at top volume, it darn near gave me and Tybalt the fright of our lives!

Also, you get that "Virus database has been updated" thing from time to time, which has been known to startle me severely when I'm working in the computer room alone.

I use Kaspersky Anti Virus program and I absolutely LOVE it! I alerts me when anyone/anything is trying to get into my computer. It automatcally updates and scans. I do alot of downloading of movies/music and I have NEVER had a problem. I would recommend it to anyone. It catches things that Norton, McCafee, AVG, and Avast dont.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend Norton/Symantec from my own personal experience. We have BitDefender, and it is fabulous. Thus far we have not gotten infected with anything, and DH is a "high risk" user (i.e. he does IRC chat rooms, visits a LOT of websites, and since we have domains we get a ton of spam).

Here's a review page of anti-virus programs: http://antivirus-software.6starrevie...s%20protection The Big Two of McAffee and Norton are not the top rated. I know that BitDefender was actually developed by hackers who weren't satisfied with the ones on the market at the time because they knew that those weren't offering the best protection.

And I'll move this to Tech Help.

I am a big fan of AVG (I use it on both of my computers) as it is great protection, and totally free. It takes a little while now to find the free version, but its there. Their homepage is http://www.grisoft.com

I have to agree. AVG is free and it updates almost daily. It's very easy to use. I have McAfee until my subscription ran out, and I like AVG a hundred percent better.

I've been using Avast! for about 5 months and it is soooo much better than Norton Anti-virus. It's even better than McAfee, IMO, which neglected to warn me about the file attachment that came with a fake Paypal email. Avast warned me about the file attachment immediately.

We use Norton Internet Security at work and its good and easy to use, we had a lot of problems with McAfee and alot of other programmes falsely think the software we use for work is a virus so we don't have many choices.

I use Avast on my desktop and its great I'd recomend it and its totally free no silly trials, I also have Karersky on my laptop which i also like.

I personally think Norton anti virus has security holes and it stamps all over your computer

Mcafee is ok its just annoying I want an antivirus that sits in the background and does its job. Mcaffee is just plain annoying with banneres/windows always appearing.

Go for avast I say. Its free and it works

I use the whole Norton System Works and Firewall package and have been extremely happy with it. This includes anti-virus, spam and pop-up blocking.
